Planting Into Slate

Hi,
We want to cover the bottom of our tank in some plum slate we have been slowly washing and scrubbing.
We plan on having a slated area, and an area off towards the corner being a quiet area, and using some small sand.
We want to have some plants planted in the slated area, and was wondering if it would be easy doing this, and what advice if any, people have for doing this.
There is bound to be someone out there who has used a slate substrate in the past, and has planted it up.

These plants are already thriving in our tank, so we would rather plant them all than do away with them.

Is the slate going to be directly on the glass?
Or on top of some sort of substrate?
I would make some pockets of substrate, plants in the pockets, and then the slate around it.

you could get some aquatic compost under the slate before you put the slate down and then plant into that

well we were considering leaving some of the old gravel as a very thin layer underneath, but invisible to look at, just somewhere to sit the slate on, would this be the best option?
Then we can embed plants into that.

I seen this plum slate in homebase yesterday, I think it would look quite good to be honest. Give it a go and if it doesn't work out then you could try with putting some aquatic compost. Its worth a try.

EDIT: cactus compost also works and is cheaper.

how much was it for how much?
Cos we picked up 25kg for £4, but saw some on tesco website for £137 for the same amount!!!!
EH?!?!?!
Anyway, it was probably more expensive in homebase, they are proper rip off merchants!

you could super glue some moss onto the slate

I'm not really sure of the price as they didn't have one up. Bags were 25kg. I was looking for plants so I didn't really look anymore into it. Homebase I think relies on the "emergency buy" on a lot of stuff. Their plumbing and timber is astronomical.

Good idea scotty, that would also work.
