Planted Journal

Mine is normally going within an hour, but I use warm water and then it sits on top of the hood where the ballast unit is all week until changeover.

I used warm water, and it was a little warmer than that in the tank, i have a whole pot of the yeast, so i can just keep trying with differant temps etc, but ill leave this one overnight, and if its still not going then i reckon that theres a problem with the pipes or container.
I used the left over java ferns in the 38g, and some of the moss, ill post pics in a couple of weeks when they take hold.
Also, i think im going to do a photo each day of the tank, just so i and anyone else who wants to see how it goes.

Thanks for all the help :good:

30mins tops for CO2 to start... consistently lasts for about a week. I use 3/4 of 1/2tsp yeast...

Well now the C02 is working, but the ladder is full of large bubbles, about the lenght of each "step-up" and then sometimes they float out. When or will this clear, and what should i do (if anything?)

Thanks alot, Mike

Ok thanks alot RadaR, ill just leave it be, how often should the mix be changed?

Cheers, Mike

Usually a week. If you had 2 canisters then you could alternate the days you change the mixtures and therefore have a constent output of CO2.
ie. change canister one on monday, change canister two on thursday.

Ahh, good idea, i may buy a seccond then, but ill see how it goes.

Thanks, Mike

That is a nice little setup, and I'm glad you're opting for the DIY mix. It's so much better in the long run.

The Nymphaea should be planted in the substrate with just the top of the bulb sticking out and the shoots. That's good that it's sprouting, in no time, you'll have a lovely plant that will probably outgrow your current setup unless you train it to stay compact. They enjoy deep tanks.

Nymphaea lotus comes in several color varieties, a red, a green, and a mottled. There could be more, but those are the ones I know of. Training a lotus to stay compact is pretty simple, you simply pluck off the leaves that approach the surface. Don't let the leaves touch the surface. The resulting leaves will then become smaller and stay more compact. To encourage a flower, you do just the opposite and ecourage leaves to reach the surface. I've been doing this for about 6 months and have yet to see a flower, though I am starting to get more lily pad like leaves that are the precurser. Go me!
