I figure I'd like to keep things organized, and I do better typing than I do writing

Anyway, about a week ago I finally bit the bullet and bought a 29 gallon tank to replace the 10 that had been circling the drain. And by that, I mean my cat developed a near psychic attraction to it ever since the cover broke, and I couldn't be there to supervise while at class. This kitten is four months old and knows how to open doors. Anyway, here's the jerry rigged siphon made of airline tubing and tape because my mother stole my siphon.

That thing went over my bed, across the carpet, attached to the bathroom threshold, then again to the lip of the tub. In hindsight, it probably would have just been easier to lead the tubing out the window just two feet to the right of the picture.

Here's an absolutely fabulous image of Blue (the cat innocently looking up at the camera) investigating the tubing. Just as he innocently ate my fish.

Since the tubing's diameter was small and the water pressure was basically 0, the process took a few hours to complete. Here you can see Shasta, my sister's dog's paw and a sock she decided to bring from my closet.

At this point, I kind of had to stop and just marvel at the tank because it's so big in comparison!!!

Ignore the absolutely horrendous decoration, I'm moving in a few months so I've taken a lot of stuff down. Anyway, this is when I was desperately trying to rip something up with tape and the same wiring. Spoiler warning: it didn't work, and I did it the bucket way. Side note, heavy lifting is indeed a way to push past an Atkin's stall. I had dropped 7 pounds the next morning

Again, ignore the horrendous decorating and mess. Here's the tank after it was filled and I had jammed an airstone, filter and heater into it and fit my T5 on top. On the bottom you can see Blue photobombing yet another picture. Anyway, I seeded it with the 10 gallon's filter media to kick of the cycle.

'Nuff said.

I ordered plants a few days later and they came the next day for cheap. I was pretty impressed, honestly. So is Blue.

This is the most recent picture from a few days ago. A bacterial bloom is making the water a little cloudy, but the plants are doing well (knock on wood). I'm dosing ferts, excel carbon, and macronutrients regularly, and they seem to be responding well. Also, the tank seems to have gone through an expedited cycle - it's only been a week and a half and I have a 50 ppm nitrate reading!

I'm waiting to see more growth in the plants before stocking, and even then I'm still exploring my stocking options. Anyway, I'll keep y'all up to date!

Thats starting to look good Alex.   Like I said in pm Anubias Crypts Vals For Floating plants Water sprite and Riccia are great.

This is my other Betta tank.

Again thank you, this will be a huge help to my five gallon. I'll be sure to credit you when it's done!

Looks good!

Thank you! I think I'm going to go ahead and start stocking, since the cycle seems to be complete and the plants are growing well. I'm trying to decide between honey/dwarf/blue gouramis, kribenses, and a pair of GBR (and a female betta, I think I read they're compatible) for my more larger fish. I'm also considering doing a betta sorority.. though the plants would have to be more grown out before I start stocking. On the other hand, I might also do a betta imbellis tank.

In addition to that, any top/middle swimmer suggestions would be appreciated! I'm leaning towards a school of fancy guppies, I think they're pretty gorgeous, but aside from that I have no ideas.

Just got paid, so I took an eBay shopping trip!  Mesh cover supplies bought for this tank - it'll put an end to Blue's reign of terror.

Another update - just decided on a GBR pair for my "big fish," and they're coming in the mail next week. Also, the bacterial bloom cleared, and I see a bit more red in my red swords and ludwigia!

There's a film of something on the inside of the tank - I think it's plant debris, and I'll run a sponge over it when I get home. But I definitely am seeing more red and growth (yay iron up supplements)!

Small update - I did a little moving around to create the allusion of it being a little more densely planted ;)

Excuse the reflection, bleh. Anyway, a couple of days ago the GBRs came in!

The only picture I have of them together, since they're a little flighty. They're a mated pair and they go everywhere together - especially where my camera can't reach.

They really like to hand around the corner of the tank, around the amazon swords.

 D'aww, hopefully once they settle in you can get more pics. Are you going to add a background btw?

Of course!!! And yes,  once I've saved enough to buy plants for my five gallon, they're both getting a background. I'm thinking black to make everything pop!

Minor update - here are some pics of the GBRs. Their colors are really starting to show, and I think the male grew a bit too.

I'm thinking about adding some RCS for a cleanup crew, and I've always really loved to have some inverts.

So unfortunately I'm battling diatoms, and they've been growing for a good week now. I got two nerites to help with cleanup, but they seem to be hanging out either on the back glass pane or the rocks. Honestly, I got frustrated and scrubbed the walls with my fingers, then uprooted each plant and gave their leaves a little finger scrub. I thought they had some sort of nutrient deficiency, but no, they were completely covered in diatoms. I don't have an after picture since there was all kinds of debris and fog despite 10 minutes of netting, so I'm leaving it to hopefully filter out. Hopefully.

Yes your rams should clean up the RCS in no time.

True, I looked into it a bit more and came to that conclusion too. Scratch that one off.

Edit: I'm thinking Otos, now.

Otos are a good shout, very charismatic little guys!

As for the diatoms, its not uncommon for new tank setups so I wouldn't worry! Have you looked at how much nutrients you are dosing and your tanks lighting duration? Might be something to check out to clear it up faster!

I'm loving the gravel, where did you get it from?

Hmmm. They're so adorable, honestly.

And I'm dosing the recommended amount of macronutrients on the seachem bottle, so maybe I need to look into a calculator? And they are starting to clear up - knock on wood.

Also, it's Petco black sand. The grain is kind of big, but it's nice, cheap sand.
