I figure I'd like to keep things organized, and I do better typing than I do writing
Anyway, about a week ago I finally bit the bullet and bought a 29 gallon tank to replace the 10 that had been circling the drain. And by that, I mean my cat developed a near psychic attraction to it ever since the cover broke, and I couldn't be there to supervise while at class. This kitten is four months old and knows how to open doors. Anyway, here's the jerry rigged siphon made of airline tubing and tape because my mother stole my siphon.
That thing went over my bed, across the carpet, attached to the bathroom threshold, then again to the lip of the tub. In hindsight, it probably would have just been easier to lead the tubing out the window just two feet to the right of the picture.
Here's an absolutely fabulous image of Blue (the cat innocently looking up at the camera) investigating the tubing. Just as he innocently ate my fish.
Since the tubing's diameter was small and the water pressure was basically 0, the process took a few hours to complete. Here you can see Shasta, my sister's dog's paw and a sock she decided to bring from my closet.
At this point, I kind of had to stop and just marvel at the tank because it's so big in comparison!!!
Ignore the absolutely horrendous decoration, I'm moving in a few months so I've taken a lot of stuff down. Anyway, this is when I was desperately trying to rip something up with tape and the same wiring. Spoiler warning: it didn't work, and I did it the bucket way. Side note, heavy lifting is indeed a way to push past an Atkin's stall. I had dropped 7 pounds the next morning
Again, ignore the horrendous decorating and mess. Here's the tank after it was filled and I had jammed an airstone, filter and heater into it and fit my T5 on top. On the bottom you can see Blue photobombing yet another picture. Anyway, I seeded it with the 10 gallon's filter media to kick of the cycle.
'Nuff said.
I ordered plants a few days later and they came the next day for cheap. I was pretty impressed, honestly. So is Blue.
This is the most recent picture from a few days ago. A bacterial bloom is making the water a little cloudy, but the plants are doing well (knock on wood). I'm dosing ferts, excel carbon, and macronutrients regularly, and they seem to be responding well. Also, the tank seems to have gone through an expedited cycle - it's only been a week and a half and I have a 50 ppm nitrate reading!
I'm waiting to see more growth in the plants before stocking, and even then I'm still exploring my stocking options. Anyway, I'll keep y'all up to date!
