Hi I need to know what this plant is and whether it needs to be planted in the subrate or left free floating.

i would say its either a Cabomba or a Green Myriophyllum

It is a parrot feather, I think. One of the Myriophyllum spp.

just had a quick look at the parrot feather and the stems seem too densly packed it just doesnt look like it. just looked at the Green Myriophyllum at it looks like that. So planted or free floating?

not the easiest of plants to grow it requires a lot of patience to get it to establish a root ball

Any ways I can help it to establish a root ball?

i put mine in the window in a tall glass full of water with some ferts in then let the roots develope before planting it just because the first time around i got fed up with re planting stems everyday untill it rooted
