Hiya

Ok so I'm thinking or ordering my plants online but I have a couple of questions.

1. Where would you guys recommend I get them from?

2. Someone was talking about a floating plant a few weeks ago and I liked the photo of it. I want to get one coz I believe my Gouramis will appreciate it but I can't think of it's name...it had "frog" in the title? Also is it suitable for a low light/tech aquarium?

have a read of this...

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/298938-a-guide-on-where-to-buy-plants/

and the plant you're referring to is Amazon Frogbit, its an easycare floating plant, which would be ideal for your Gourami.

I'm going to assume you live in the US.

I got mine from Sweet Aquatics and was very pleased with my order. They can even recommend plants to you based on your tanks size, lighting, inhabitants, etc. I had them recommend plants to me since my tank was low light and I wasn't sure what would live in there. The plants I got from them are all growing great, I actually should be trimming them down today. I also asked them some other things like what to soak the plants in to prevent hitchhikers, and they did give me some advice. Great customer service and a good product.

Could you be thinking of frogbit?

Thanks guys, I think that is the one I mean :)

Thanks Katty but I'm in the UK. You lot seems to have a lot better services out there than we do :(

right.. lets sort this mess out...

Java plants... have had some very poor dealings with them and i know many others have. Cheap though

Plants alive... cheap, but often not of great quality. fine for plants like ech's, crypts, vallis etc that will bounce back but dont expect large plants, or much roots!
oh packaging isnt always great...

Aquaessentials and TGM... more expensive, but they are aquafleur/tropica plants and are large, well rooted and come in excellent condition. packaging is sound and postage is ALWAYS fast.

Ebay: The guys at Last trading post are excellent and sell some really nice plants. They are well known for the quality of their vallis.

I would tend to avoid those awful ebay package deals that have about 50 plants for like a fiver. not worth it, most of the plants you are sent are totally useless for your tank as they require high nutrients / high light / high co2. (unless you have a high tech tank)
secondly, you always get sent some non aquatic plants that rot. its best to buy the plants you want and not aload of other rubbish.

Note: some sellers copper dip their lants so ALWAYS wash them first. Furthermore, most are in the emmersed form when you recieve them.

The best place to get plants from is other members. if you source well, you get fully grown, healthy plants, that are well rooted and at an exceptional price as well... You know that they have not been copper dipped and will not be in their emersed form...

cheers

(note... these are my experiances apart from the ebay package deals which i have seen from other members and they are my observations over the last 2 years or so)

obviously some people are probably going to disagree/argue

think every one has there own opinions but the best i have found is www.plantedtanks.co.uk they are new and the guy has his own forum site and is a member of another gives sound advice and answer emails i made a joke about he got my order wrong i wanted some moss i ordered loose it was sent on a stick he sent the whole order out again the next day i ended up with £15 worthe of plants free as a apology .

Ahhh I ordered from Last Trading Post yesterday, they're doing 25 plants for £5. Josh did last week and he said he's very impressed with them. I've requested Amazon Swords and an Amazonian Frogbite which they're gonna send me and also various others (which I just said I wanted to look similar to AS but smaller). I hope they're ok! :S

Plants came. No idea what some of them are! Got the Swords and Frogbite (it's in a few pieces but I assume that's ok if the root's there). There are some that look like swords but smaller.......how can I be sure either way if they're Java Ferns or something else coz obv I don't want to be planting them if they are. There's also some that appear to have no roots atall, they almost look like twigs of a small tree....what could they be?

Finally, stupid question but do I literally just float the Frogbite on the water?

Yes, caz just float the frogbit. If you are struggling to Id the plants, pop some photos up and I'm sure we can id em.
