When I first set out I thought about using this to help my plants, but my heavily planted tank just grows from strength to strength! I must have perfect conditions in there....

So my question to you all is: Do you find that you have to use ferts to keep them alive? Would they die if you didn't use them? Would there be any point in me using them?

Cheers

Well, I dont think my plants will die if I stop using ferts but I know for a fact they are doing better with... When I first started I never added ferts... few weeks later as there was more growth I started noticing micro - deficiencies so I bought some micro-nutes... I would say within the 1st week the plants literally started BLOWING up....then a few weeks into that I saw a few more deficiencies so did the same dose but 2x a week.... now everything is growing great... (with low light)

I just figured that there were enough nutes at the beginning because the few plants, there when I added more + the growth of the existing they started up using more nutes...

The more plant matter, the higher deman for nutes...

But I never added macro nutes and their doing fine, I guess from the stocking.....

So to answer you question without the above "shpeal"..... no it isnt necessary to have nutes, but I guarantee you will see a difference with them....

tis all about the light!

Interesting, I might look in to it a bit more then. Just come out of my fixed rate mortgage so now have a little cash to play with :)

Polak, I have plants in each of my tanks, what treatments do you use? Can you supply a link?

I'd like something that's easy to maintain (just add to water each week) and obviously very safe for fish.

I use Seachems Flourish... its just micro nites, not macro..... if you are stocked pretty good with fish I think you could live without dosing macro (like me).... It really depends where you live.. here in the US Seachems is cheap and the alternative (TPN) is expensive as HELL!! But if you live in Europe, (England etc.) I hear Tropica Plant Nutririon (TPN) is the best and Seachems is expensive..... If you think you may need macro nutes (If you have high light and dose CO2) you could also get TPN+.. which is micro AND macro nutes....We cant even get TPN+ here in the states for some reason so I cannot comment if its good/bad.......

But just try micro nutes and you WILL see a BIG difference... If you have more questions portaining to what plants and what needs they have just post a topic in the plant section and you will get some real EXPERT advice!!!!

oh man, how very wrong you are.....

yu can grow anyting under 2 30w t8 tubes.
its all about co2, ferts and flow.

ha ha ha now then Nick, what determines what co2 and ferts you need?? I was suggesting that the OP lighting was enough not to dose anything and pull most of his nutrient from the water. I susspect his water is quite hard.

re-read what you have just written? it doesnt make sense does it?

just having light wont make plants grow happily and healthily. you need nutrients and coo2 to complete the triangle.

you wouldnt say a fire will light with just fuel would you? you need the heat (source of ignition) and the oxygen...

terrestrial plants have access to about 300ppm co2,in our planted tanks we aim for abbout 30ppm which is a safe bet for not gassing the fish. now thats only a tenth of what is accessible if they reach the surface, so by not adding co2, you are going to have around 5-10ppm in your water which is not enough. furthermore, this is going to fluctuate massively, for examplee when you do your water changes, this often co-incides with the photoperiod ruining that particular days growth in essense. fluctating co2 and ferts levels are what causes the algae outbreaks....

its all about achieving the balance, an equilibriium.

yes, light is a factor but most people far over do it with light and experiance all kinds of issues. supercoleys tank is a good example, relatively low light but his plants are growing very nicely, its the perfect low tech set-up. as i said before, you can grow anything under 2 30w t8's, its co2, ferts and also flow many inexperianced planters overlook.

Similar to Polak's first answer. My plants wouldn't die without the ferts I use, but I have seen a posotive difference since using them.

But I wouldn't dream of not using CO2 or having poor lighting.

James.

its common sense you are going to see a difference. if you dont, your doing something massively wrong!!

its like feeding someone only bread and water, and then feeding them a balanced varied diet. they are going to be more active, healthier, stronger etc...

Nick, how come you don't understand what i had written, it was quite easy to understand.

First plants need light, then comes the next biggest thing C02 then NKP and the micros. What i meant is...its all about the light. Why do you feel you have to prove me wrong as there is nothing to prove wrong lol

right then let me re write and see if you get it.

the OP probably has low light, which in turn would make is water and stocking enough to achive equalibrium in his tank.

Look at the like of Supercoley and llj, they dose maybe some N OR P every 2 or 3 weeks and get away with great low tech set ups.

do you get what i'm saying now Nick?

i understand what you are saying and the theory behind it, but your iniitial post diidnt contain enough info foor the op. i, along with many others, have been trying to reduce the myth of the 2WPG and its followers claiming you have to have that or plants wont grow. - i know you werent implyiing it, but the op could take that they just need to up their light in the tank to make the plants grow. and thus by doing this, carnage would erupt!!

we both understand, as we have the knowledge, but newbiies need to know that light, ferts, co2 and flow are all on a par with each other. get one slightly out and you will not get the desired results.

I'm not a newbie, I have tried a home made C02 diffuser and didn't notice much of a difference. Since taking it out there has been no difference to my plant growth.

thats because diy C02 wouldn't make any difference to a tank that's 240l, you'd need at least 4, 2l bottles to make any impact.
