Do you mean like a carpeting plant? They would not really appreciate it and would probably make a real mess of it.
Oh i see, sorry about that. I do not use planting substrates but from what i do know the are usually capped with sand or gravel anyway.
I use JBL Manado with nothing covering it and the corys love rooting through it and have great big long whiskers. Its helpful because its so light that the cories can sift it easily so it does no damage at all.
Depends which onebut personally, I would say yesColombo Florabase would be good too, nice dark substrate that, it feels like silk when you run your hand through it!
