Planning Nano Reef

As a basic rule of thumb, you should be aiming for 20x water turn over if you plan to keep soft coral in there, so ideally you should look for 500GPH+ although personally I think this works best from a combination of powerheads which will move the water around more of the tank than a single one.

I wouldn't recommend anyone started a tank without a reliable source of RO / DI water, which means either buying it locally, or more convenient and probably less expensive in the long run, buying a filter and making your own.

Don't worry about finding water from a mature tank, it's the rock and the bacteria it houses which makes the difference, not the water itself.

wellmy first priority is getting the tank going sso I think ill get some RO water from my lfs
and in the summer after my tank is running and I have some more money ill get a RO unit :good:

and would two powerheads of 250gph be better than the one 500

I like having redundancy and flexibility, so I'd go with the dual option.

As for the water, you get distilled water at your local supermarket, not your LFS ;)

Two powerheads will also make it easier to achieve a more 'random turbulent' flow which is the preferred type of circulation. There are different 'types' of flow; random is better as it allows water circulation through, prefferrably, every nook & cranny of the tank. Having two powerheads plus your return flow from the filter will make this heaps easier to accomplish.
