how long does it take for them to grow?

and ive been told if u get them really young and grow them up with oscars they wont eat the oscar is this correct?

What type of piranha

red bellied pirahna ... hes very young and aint got his red belly yet.

how long/big does it take/ have to be before it gets its red bellie?

They normally have a nice red belly by the time they reach 4 inches. Many times they don't kill other fish right off, they take bites from their fins. If it were a black piranha it would normally eat a fish by biting it in half. Red Bellies either eat from the rear of the fish or on small fish a bite to the center. If you want any fish in the tank do not expect them to enjoy living in a tank with a piranha.

With a varied diet, large enough aquarium and plenty of wc's a dime-sized redbelly will be about 7" after the first year.

You have a much better chance of getting something to live with a Pygocentrus than a Serrasalmus. Serra's, like a Black rhom or elongatus will kill anything and everything in their tanks and like to be alone. Redbelly's (Pygocentrus nattereri), will usually kill everything also but there are sometimes they will allow other things to live. Like Aprilia997 mentioned, large redbelly's will sometimes not eat tiny fish and there are some that have had luck with plecos, others have had luck with a few other fish but only temporarily.

Rule of thumb with piranha's, don't add anything you don't want killed. Sometimes they are ok with others for months and one day they snap and kill everything in there. I say you'd have about a 99.999% chance of an Oscar living long with a shoal of piranha's. Redbelly's don't even like each other and are a LOT more teritorial than even cichlids are.

Edit: BTW, they live 35+ years also.

I wouldn't add a oscar to a tank with a lone piranha. Especially if its the same size or bigger. Your piranha may not stand a chance.

Best fish I have kept with piranha is convicts. They tend to pick on the piranha.

I didn't know it was a single redbelly.

In that case I wouldn't get a redbelly piranha. They will do nothing but hide in the back corners and behind plants even if another fish isn't in the tank. If there is another fish in the tank then they will bully them until he either bites them from being harrassed too much (which will bite a convict etc in half and you lose him also) or he'll just be so stressed his whole life. Redbelly's are too stressed out when alone to usually fight back. They aren't the feared mankillers everyone thinks they are, especially when kept singly.

The only piranha you can keep alone are from the Serrasalmus species like I have, a Serrasalmus rhombeus. But they will kill everything you try to put into there because they are loner fishes and prefer it that way.

The rhombus a black piranha? Are they skidish at all? I have an empty 55 gallon I'd like to throw a single aggressive fish in. But I have never came across a black piranha anywhere. I could probably special order one.

while were on the pirahna subject,i thought of when i was younger at a aquarium they have a pirahna tank with about 15-20 red bellies and the owner added a black pirahna thinking nothing of it.i went back a week later and the red ate the black.just though id share.

They are when very young. It takes a while for them to come out of their shell but when they do they will attack the glass to get to you. You have to be very careful when cleaning their tank once they aren't afraid of you they can do some damage. 2 bites and thru your wrist from what I hear.

I got mine at Shark Aquraium. 1.5" for $14.99 and $45 for shipping overnight with live arrival guarantee.

They are all wild because they don't breed in captivity.

You'll need to upgrade the tank in a while...they'll grow to 6" the first year and an inch-inch and a half a year after that.

Let me know if you need anything else at all.

If you want to have a single aggressive piranha for life in a 55g you could go with a sanchezi or irritans. :)

It's good to have a piranha fan around, glad you joined! :good:

Edit: I should say that I always use PraziPro for all of my fish and especially wild-caught like rhoms. I use it for 3 weeks.

Is that site in the UK or US? I'm at work and for some reason it won't let me view that particular site.

I may go down to my LFS after work and see if they can special order me anything besides red bellies.

Yea I am in the US. I will check both sites out when I get home from work. You got me wanting an oddball now.
