Can I use pinewood (whitewood) as hood for a 220L (120Lx38Wx50H) tank?

I read some time ago about the toxicity of pinewood (shavings used for pet beddings and litter) due to the aromatic smells produced to the volatile compounds such as aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols.

The hood will not be in contact with the water.

Has anyone used pinewood as a tank wood?

All comments are welcome especially from those who has used pinewood as a tank hood.

Well, the way I see it is that if the finish you give the wood can't keep those compounds in, it probably won't protect the wood from the moisture of the tank, which would probably cause it to warp. Pine is often used for aquarium hoods anyway.

My top cover DID warp. I will have it replaced with marine plywood.
