i just read the post again and could not even understand what i typed when i upgrade my goldfish to a 50 gallon and all the fish are out i will put sand in there and take out the gravel

as long as you stir the sand (i only mean gently) once a week or so it will stop the sand compacting plants generally do better in the sand tho you could also use cat litter under the sand

There is no need to do this at all, bosh it in and forget about it. BOOM
