I know I am still overdue on providing a sump write up for the resource centre but on the back of the photo comp I was having a think.

Would a quick "How to take a pic of your tank" guide be useful. I know there are other good photographers on here, and definitely people with some better lenses than I have but I do teach photography, all be it covert surveillance not marine but I have a reasonable understanding of the best ways to get pics in the tank. It was also Lewis's comment about having a better camera which just got me thinking that sometimes a little bit of knowledge can turn a fairly basic camera into something capable of taking great shots. It may also give people a pointer for buying camera's if they are interested in taking tank shots. For example I have a very expensive Nikon D2X and VR Lens set for work but many of my shots are taken with a Nikon D100 which was bought 2nd hand off ebay for £150, this camera was the mainstay of the press, the military and the Police for many years and has only been replaced in the last couple of years if you are capable of taking good pics you will get them with this camera.

I know there is a photography section but it gets a bit "my lense is bigger than yours" and people want to out tech each other (yawn). So what does anyone think, worthwhile?

P.S On the subject of "My lens is bigger than yours" I have access to a 64000mm Lens, it is carried in a case normally used for Surface to Air missile pods and if you take a photo of someone with it at full range you can't see their feet as the curvature of the Earth comes into play. ;)

ohhhh, yes please. I love taking photos and have to take hundreds of fuzzy pictures just to get 1 good one!!!
Any tips would be fantastic, your photographs are always so brilliant.

sounds good to me, although i'm ok with my non dslr camera i cant take tank pics to save my life, so i think the needs of the non dslr camera owners also needs to be considered as well if this goes ahead

It will be aimed at the basics mate as some people are doing things that are easily avoided and would improve the pics a great deal. I will then progress up to a bit on settings for SLRs.

Would love some help on taking photo's of my tank. I am fine with everything else, it's just fish haha.

Sounds like a great idea mate would love some pointers if it helps take awesome pics of my tank!!!!!!!!!!!!

..............Oh and my family!!!

I hate it when you miss a really good post and then suddenly read it and you feel like you missed out a bit!

YEHH that would be very very useful!!

I'm really interested in the surv photography though!! So are we talking like press? or detective!! :)

Happy George! No way! I am too!! :hyper: Are you in forensics?

I'm MET, only 3 years in on response still, nothing fancy like you!

EDIT: clearly not forensics! SV!

Already an article on how to take photo's of an aquarium and its inhabitants.

I agree on the lens size thing, any one who boasts about their camera or lens is an idiot, a good photographer is one that can take good pictures irrespective of equipment.

I had read it before but I think there are some bits missing on that post. It gives some good basics but there are other things that people might want to experiment with, and could do with a bit about composition and editing, thanks for linking it though. Entirely agree with a good photographer is a good photographer gear is irrelevant. I took some of my best photos ever in Cuba and when I came home everyone said "Oh that's because you have that expensive camera", what I had used was an old NIKON Coolpix with 3.5MP.

No I'm on SB now won't post the gory details here, will have to wait for our meet at Reefshack and we can swing the lamp.

Surely putting forward suggestions as to how the article can be improved would be easier and more logical? Moderators are able to edit the thread, then you can have your contributions inserted and referenced.

Plus, as that photography guide belongs in the aquariums picture section, where it should - it would free up space on the marine boards where it isn't necessary to bulk up the top of the board with stickies, as photography isn't marine exclusive.

Well we were putting together a series of sticky resources for the benefit of all. If it offends you and you think I should do it your way then I'm sorry but I consider it may be useful to have one here, hence me asking, and the series of "yes pleases". As many people don't stray off the Marine section (with good reason judging by the negative responses and recent experiences elsewhere). There are differences to marine photos and the last time I tried to make a point in the photographic section and suggest how we may be able to offer advice on equipment for beginners it turned into a photographic p*ss***g contest, so I stay clear.

I was trying to be helpful but if the "don't bothers" and "don't want it in the Marine" responses outweigh the "yes pleases" then I won't put myself out to do it.

Doesn't offend me in the slightest, at the end of the day it's up to the mods, the only differences I can see in marine photography are the objects and animals you're taking photo's of, but if there are others that make it significantly different please state them. It'd just be easier and more logical if we improved the current resources, there's no reason why a carbon copy of the current photography guide can't be placed in the guide you guys are creating, plus any other contributions you wish to add.

Well I don't like the way it's written and I think it could be more informative and in a logical order. I have no interest in doing it for the photography section as for the differences if I write the article you can read it and find out can't you ;) or not, eithers fine.
