This was already posted on tropical chit chat but i decided to put it here....

The guy at my lfs told me to fix my hair algae problem, i could use phosguard, however im trying to treat a 12 gallon and the package is for a 20 gallon (usa) i can deal with that part, however i was wondering how this stuff worked ext. becuase it says its phosphate and silicate controll.... My tank is heavily planted, and i dont know wherethe algae came from to begin with... everything that can be scrubbed has been, 20% water changes weekly and all that good stuff... I cut off some of my java fern leaves becuase they were covered in it... I hate doing that becuase my java fern is HUGE (10 inches tall) and i dont want to screw it up... ive had it growing for about 2 years now and id hate to lose it lol... yeah im attached to my plants.. its sad... i feel bad when i throw duckweed out that my lfs accidently gets in the bags with the fish but anyways, should i use this phosguard stuff or something else... i also have some sort of algae remover but i misplaced it and i cant seem to find it... im sure i could if i really tried though so any suggestions for this would be great

Hi,

Perhaps your phosphate, like mine, is high from the tap? Water changes will just be adding more. High phosphate from the tap is a blessing; one less thing you need to worry about/purchase.

What is your nitrate readings? maybe you have to raise your nitrate levels. You can buy KNO3 from Aqua Essentials. But first you must determine what your tap water levels are. My guess is you have high phosphate and zero nitrate in your tap water. Take it from there.

Kind regards,

Andy
