I was wondering if anybody had any ideas or tips on how to decrease the Ph level in my tank...?
It is 2 weeks into fishless cycling and i took a Ph test in my tank, it read 7.6. I have researched and this seems to be high for a freshwater tank.. i read that it should be around 7.

Is this true, and if so i do i go about lowering the level.

Regards.

Paul

ypu yup yup! usually people only lower the PH for breeding, keeping rare fishes etc etc.. it will do more harm then good if you mess around with your PH :)

Cheers people...!

It seems i was worrying for nothng then, so ill leave it at its natural state rather than mess around with it..

Thanks for your advice...

Also i did another nitrite test yesterday 2 weeks after i started fishless cycling and the tank does not seem to have progressed any further from the original test that i took after one week after i began cycling, why is this? and is it a problem? i was told it would take 3 weeks but progress is going slow.

Hi,my ph was 7.6 when I did my Fishless cycle ,a couple of weeks after it had finished it came down to 7.2.
I shouldnt worry about it. :)

When do you think my cycle will have finished because it doesnt seemed to hav changed over the last week at all...?

Are you adding ammonia to the tank? The tank won't cycle just by letting it sit there and adding nothing.....

Im not adding amonia, all i have added is some water from the lfs tanks to generate the good bacteria...

Should i be adding my own amonia? if so how do i do this?

Well this is the way a lot of marine tanks are cycled now. In the past it has been generally thought of to add some really hardy fish to get the cycle going then remove them, mollies have most commonly been used but now of course this is considered pretty cruel and generally not advisable, I'm sure you know about this anyway otherwise you wouldn't be doing a fishless cycle...so I digress!

You can get ammonia in the tank by adding something that's going to decompose, throw in a few frozen prawns from ASDA or something like that.

Oh right, i have been putting pinches of flake food in the tank every 3 days, should i be doing ths more regulary?

could i put some cucumber in?

Read this

It explains in detail how to do a fishless cycle

And read this for sources of ammonia depending on where you live

If you have any questions regarding how to do this post them in the beginners section, there are lots of threads in that section about fishless cycling that you can read up on..........good luck with the cycle.

Patience friend. My 30G tank took over 6 weeks to fully cycle. I did have a bout of ich that forced me to add medication and do alot of water changes which caused a mini cycle but now at 4 months my tank is the best ever. I have added live plants which will probably send it flying wierd again but I guess that is how to learn. Yours sounds perfect Most fish can endure 6-7.8 easily without having a problem .
