My ph is 8.5 and all my fish r happy should i start messing with the ph? my tank is just your basic community tank tetras and that. my tap water is a ph of 7.5 i cant figure out why its rising. should i mess with the ph?

I would not advise you to mess with the ph, a stable ph, be it too high or low, is better than a fluctuating ph for the fish.

Have you left some tap water out over night in a cup and tested the next day? Sometimes ph rises once its been left out which may explain your ph rise in the tank. Or do you have rocks in the tank, sometimes these can raise ph too?

If the fish are happy and healthy then I wouldnt worry too much.

I agree that you shouldn't try to adjust it. What decorations and substrate do you have in the tank? Some substrates will raise the pH and also a lot of rocks will. Do the vinegar test on any rocks or decorations you have. If you put a drop of vinegar on it and it fizzes, then it will raise the pH.

A couple of people have reported that certain dechlorinators (but not all) can raise the pH - mine doesn't, but it would be interesting to know if this can happen and if so, which brands. If you try leaving some water in a cup overnight and then testing, as minxfishy suggested, it would be interesting to try a second cup with water + dechlorinator.

IME it's not a good idea to try adjusting with chemicals like pH Minus, especially if your water is hard - they don't seem to work long-term and you just risk pH fluctuations which will harm your fish a lot more than a stable high pH.

Thank for replies. In my tank i have gravel at the bottom and plastic ornaments. I do have 3 live plants could these have altered the ph? i dont have any rocks in there.

No the plants wouldnt have changed the ph.

Could you do a test for us? Add some tap water to a cup and leave it to stand for 24 hours and then test the ph. In another cup put some tap water in with the required amount of dechlorinator (which ever brand you use) again leave to stand for 24 hours and test the ph? The post up the results.
