Hi all,

This is just a follow up to this this thread. As dwarfgourami said:
Now this strikes me as a scientific question where we should be able to get together a significant amount of data, considering how many of us there are who've had livebearer fry. Keep 'em coming, folks!

I totally agree. I know there are a lot of us here, who have fry, and I think it would be interesting to see what comes out of it, and to see if the lower pH/more males hypothesis really is true. So let's see what you have! I'd recommend you wait until your fry are at least 3+ months old to say what sex they are, as you all know some males can be late developing. You should be able to get an idea of what's going on by then.

Here's what I have:

Variatus Fry, born October 24th and November 15th.
pH of tank: 6.5
Number of females/males: 2 Females, 7 males.

Wagtail Platy Fry, born November 2nd.
pH of tank: 6.3
Number of females/males: No females, 2 males.

My pregnant sunburst platy gave birth sometime last night in my community tank, When I saw how skinny she had gotten I looked for the fry but couldn't find any so I assumed they had all become fishy breakfast. About 2 hours ago I cleaned out the tank, and to my surprise I discovered 13 fry hiding among the gravel at the bottom of the tank wub.gif . I've lost 3 fry so far but I have 6 really active ones. The rest will probably become betta food.

i will definately keep you posted on the oucome the ph of the tank is about 6.7 so any suggestions on what they should be? i think maybe wither mostly boys or 50/50 i'll let you know in 3 months or so

note: not all the fry made the pic :X

Hmmm...I'll definantly keep ya'll posted on the gender ratio of my fry. I have a PH of 7.6 - 7.8 (PH test isn't terribly specific) so it's rather high. My temperature hovers at 78 - 80 degrees F so they're growing fast. I'm actually hoping for more females than males. It'll be interesting to see the result.
