Preventing your existing stock from getting something from new arrivals is only half the reason to quar. Your healthy fish with a good immune response may be living perfectly fine with a few bacterial, protizoal, or fungal things they are exposed to. They're well fed, have fresh water, and have a stress free life.

Your new purchases have at the very least been netted, bagged, transported, and perhaps acclimated to different water. This creates stress, stress lowers the immune response in fish. They may have been quared for months before you brought them home, their quar procedure doesn't remove this stress.

That is a very good point that Tolak makes. This is in part, the reason why I personally do 10-20% daily water changes on a system that is QT'ing new stock, re-filling with water from the destination tank, after the first week in the QT system; it intentionally exposes the fish to any parasites that they will come across in the main tank, allowing them to build an immunity to them

I refuse to use pets at home since i bought a pearl gourami from the cambridge branch, and when i asked for it, the guy told me "oh no thats not a pearl gourami, pearls are all white" he asked 2 more members of staff, neither of them knew what it was! i mean c'mon everyone knows what a pearl gourami is surely.
I said to the guy i was positive thats what it was and he still wouldnt believe me!
I then heard him telling another person that it would be fine with a male betta.

So i would say to anyone, do not ask advice from anyone in the cambridge branch!
