do you think a sword from a good online source would grow way
better than a plant from petsmart

it depends on the quality from either supplier. An established plant will take off quicker, however, the final result will be the same after the worse plant has caught up.

Depends on the initial condition of the plant, like Aaron said. I have seen garbage from online vendors and I have seen top-notch quality from a big Chain store. Another option is Petsupermarket if one is near you. Sometimes, PetsMart sells the non-aquatics right along with the aquatics and you've really got to know your species to sort through that mess. I got these crypts from Petsupermarket. I venture by the labeling in their potted plants, that it's from the same initial source.

That's pretty decent quality, and their swords were good too. Well, what the plecos didn't eat, anyway. Just look at the overall health of the plant and smell the roots. Look for generally healthy leaves with no holes or discoloration, strong stems, and healthy firm white/light-colored roots. Don't buy a plant where the roots stink or where they are blackish or slimy. It should smell "green" kind of like celery or not at all. If it smells rotten, like old water for cut flowers, don't buy the plant. The shop people look at me wierd when I smell the roots and inspect the leaves, but I don't buy sick fish, why would I buy a sick plant?

I've gotten some swords along w/ other plants from Petsmart before and have been happy w/ it.
Like the PP said, it depends on the condition of the plants.
If they look good, then go ahead and get them.
Only thing you really have to worry about w/ Petsmart plants is that most of the time, you'll get snails/snail eggs. I don't find it a problem, but if that concerns you, then look over the plants very well and scrape off anything you see :)

I have bought plants from petsmart. They have been great. Only thing like said before was I got snails but my pleco eat them all. I find they have pretty good plants. Find out when they get the shipment go pick them before they even put them in the tanks. Mine come in on Thursdays .

Petco they have some sad plants. But good fish for a chain store.

I bought some plants at Petsmart once. I came home and googled the name and found out that, depsite being labeled as aquatic plants, they were not aquatic plants, and if left underwater long enough, would die. I returned them.

Yeah, I forgot about that. Ours also sells non-aquatic plants as well.
So ya gotta go in and just make sure you know how to spot what's aquatic or not. And if you're not sure, then don't buy just yet so you can go home and do a little research :)

In my experience, living in three separate geographical areas in the past 5 years, Pet Supermarket has a decent plant selection and Petsmart does not. The former takes better care of plants they have, while Petsmart plants are often seen covered in algae. Petsmart also sells non-aquatic plants as aquatic. When you bring home low quality plants, they are 'healing' a long time before they start growing. I now order my plants and fish from aquabid.com, for the most part.
