Well, it looks like some presents came with my new plants...snails!  I want to get rid of them.  I searched and saw that you can put a lettuce leaf in the tank overnight and they will swarm to it, and you just have to get rid of the lettuce leaf the next morning, but that didn't work for me.  Any other ideas?

try making a snail trap.

A bottle with the said lettuce leaf in it

I kept a snail tank to breed for my puffers, and at some point added a few "ghost shrimp" from petsmart.  Those nasty little clawed suckers cleared 60 designer ramshorn snails in probably 2 days, and that was only 5 of them.  They seem to be snail killers!!!!  Also you can try assassin snails.  And draxis commented on puffer fish, these also MASSACRE all snails.

I had an unmanageable level of pest snails that came in with plants.  At first I left them alone because I read that they do a great job aerating the substrate for the plants, not to mention algae and food clean up, but in time they bred, and bred and bred until I had fish invading my snail tank.

1 Assasin snail did nothing.
added two more and the population is declining but seems to have stabilized at a reasonable level where these harmless snails still can do their job.

you can always remove them with your hand. just pick through whatever your see and in time you'll get the numbers under control.
you can always try with other foods. like cucumber, just a small slice you put in at night and in the morning take it out and you should get some.
