My friend doesn't believe me that fish have personalities! Come on everyone, support me! Do your fish have personalities? Can you think of ones you've seen in fish? I want to prove her wrong!

I'm using !s because my period button does not work! D: Sorry for the shouting!

hi, i agree and disagree, because my bigger fish do e.g betta, rainbow, platy but my neons have none what so ever. but overall i would have to agree :good:

My bettas deffinately do. Once I open the tank lid, (its a divided 10 gallon so I can have two), my yellow betta jumps out of the water a bit and wiggles because hes a pig and makes a little pouty face at me, and he also hates my mom hahaha. Every time she walks by the tank he flares at her but when I walk by he wiggles. My orange betta on the other hand is alittle more calm. He sits and pouts on their fasting day and doesnt even bother to come up to me after he knows I skipped their breakfast feeding. These fish are way to smart for their small size.

One of my corys is a real star, he loves to play in the powerhead outlet and surf on the current :hyper: He is swimming in the middle of the tank all the time, so unusual. When my peppered corys were breeding he was really protective of their youngster, he would ward the rainbowfish away and now him and the baby hang around together, he is almost like an uncle!!

small shoaling fish don't really have personalities but do brighten up the tank
My big 6 inch single tail goldfish recently got the nick name jaws for all the fry
he ate we recently found one dead, actually his head which he ate through
a small gap in the floating plastic fry thing

IMHO, All fish have a personality even if it can be one where the fish is not very interactive or active etc. But guppys, mollys, platys and goldfish have to be some of the friendliest fish i know of, they are always there to great you when you go near the tank, swimming up and down the tank glass trying to get closer to you, or generally being inquisitive and watching what you do and nibbling your fingers etc :) .

i agreeee completley.
my boyfriend has a yellow oscar. (Doom.)
and he's insane, he thinks its a game to eat food, if it hits the floor, he won't eat it, so he has to get all the pellets before they hit the floor.
he jumps around when my boyfriend walks in the room, like a puppy that has to pee real bad.

he's the cutest thing i've ever seen.

Most of mine have personalities!
My red Betta is the active one, my blue Betta is the show off, my yellow Betta is feisty and my blue/purple Betta is the shy one.
All of my Plecos have their own personality too.

shadow has a rock in his tank along the side of where pacific is located. he'll swim to where pacific can see him, flare at him until pacific reacts then dart behind the rock where pacific can't see him.

My fancy goldfish had personailty but there no longer here now.
Love my corys they full of personality and my harlequins,.

My younger betta, Kyle likes to copy what my older betta, Kenni, does. If Kenni builds a bubble nest as soon as Kyle sees it he'll build a bigger one. If Kenni builds an even bigger one Kyle will make an EVEN BIGGER one. If Kenni eats like a little pig so will Kyle, if he leaves some of his food, so will Kyle. He didn't do this until he noticed there was another betta in the bowl beside him. when I first got Kyle he couldn't eat the pellets because they were too big to fit in his mouth. I gave him flakes. but if he saw Kenni eating pellets he wouldn't eat until I gave him one. Kenni will flare at other bettas, but Kyle will only flare at different types of fish.My guppies also have personalities. Banana, my little one will nibble my fingers and greet me when I come in. Tux, the male, will gobble up a flake that's twice the size of his little head!!! And Tulip, my othe female, likes to explore new things I put in the tank, she's also becoming friends with my cory.

My fish all have personalities except for the Neon's. It's hysterical watching the way they all check out anything new that I put in the tank. The other day I put a half a terra cotta pot in there and one by one (including the Neon's) they all went in and around the pot checking it out!

My gourami always greets me, by spitting water at me! He eats out of my hand and is probably my favourite personality wise.

The guppies are funny the way they try to get into the water testing tube when I put it in to collect water for testing.

All in all, they're all fantastic and have their own little personality traits. The more time you spend with them the easier it is to find out these things about them. I would never have believed it until I started keeping fish! Given how small their brains are I would never have thought they could have a personality or be curious about the things that go on around them and within their own environment.

But if you're not a fish keeper odds are good no-ones going to believe you. Some fish keepers don't either, I especially know one that does nothing for her fish apart from feeding and the odd water change, she doesn't know what breeds they are, just replaces them when they die, does no water tests etc, SHE doesn't believe her fish have personalities!

I've always loved loaches for their personalities, it seems like their sole purpose in life is to make friends with everything put in the tank with them. They love to play in bubbles and filter current, and it's absolutely adorable the way they pile on top of each other to rest. A pile of loaches out cutes a fluffy bunny in my book.

Puffers remind me of puppies, mine will drop everything and race to the front of the tank to beg if he spots anyone in the room.

Bettas are hilarious to watch interact with their tanks. My males will patrol around and explore every spot in the tank, fiercely defend their territory from their reflections for a bit, then collapse on a leaf somewhere to rest after a hard day's work. My females never ever miss a meal, they'll even go for fingers and are always the first to explore anything put in the tank. Whenever they lose a flare-off or a new addition to the tank catches them off guard, they'll go off to sulk somewhere.

I've had a lot of different gouramis with very different personalities, my dwarfs have usually been very fussy and grumpy, a kissing gourami I used to have would come up to greet me and eat from my hand while my current kisser is very shy and likes to hide.

Plenty of personality in fish, pet rats on the other hand I can never see any personality in.

My goldfish all have diff personality's, fudoh(choc oranda) is the boss, he gets first pick of the food, kuuga(black moore) used to be a bully but he was put in his place by fudoh when I introduced him, the littlest one Ryuki is everyone's friend, he's a real peace maker and if Fudoh & Kuuga get a little miffed with each other over food he always seems to calm it down by distracting them(might sound odd but he does it).The odd time Fudoh & Kuuga have nipped each other Ryuki has always stuck up for the victim and chased the bully away. My little mountain minnows are fun to watch, they chase each other in a line, then 2 will pair off and chase each other in circles, then they join up again and swim calmly.

My 2 cory's Mickey & Malory spend most of the day chasing each other around and playing near the airstone, they quite often do a little 'happy' dance. They like me and come out to see me, they don't like my husband though, when he goes near the tank they hide under a bridge or behind a plant.

My bichir's Gomez & Morticia - Gomez used to be a right miserable sod, staying in his cave all day, only coming out for food, now he spends most of the time with Morticia, and swims around alot. Morticia is just like the character she was named after, she's a tease, for weeks she's been trying to make friends with Gomez and be near him and he wasn't interested, now that he's interested she ignores him alot! My blue gourami Bela is soooo friendly, she's like the mum of the tank, she made friends with Morticia when I added her and swam with her all the time, then when I got my opaline Lugosi she started swimmming with her. Lugosi has the best personality of all of them, she is so ballsy, nibbling prawn out of Morticia's mouth, chasing Bela, trying to nibble my fingers and generally swimming around in what I'd say a happy way. My 2 baby BN plecs are always hiding so I haven't had the chance to observe them, I thought one of them was dead I hadn't seen it for so long but I spotted it under the bogwood earlier. One of them is definately more adventureous then the other, venturing out in the day right next to my 9 inch bichir. I don't worry about Morticia hurting them though, she just sniffs them and swims on, she's VERY gentle despite the fact she's supposed to eat anything she can fit in her mouth. She's very particular about her food, it HAS to be on the bottom, she won't touch anything moving, she will take food from my hand though :)

Yes all fish have personalities as you have aggressive and non-aggressive fish aswell as others being terratorial which is a personality trait. My severum comes to the corner of the tank and stares at anyone who is in the room begging for food as do the firemouth and angel...
