I got some peat for my sons tank today, none of my LFS's had any in stock or they dont stockit, one of them reccomened the garden store accross the carpark, so I checked it out. Sure enough they had some but only as a dehydrated (read compressed) brick, would it be ok to break off a chunk and add it to the hood mounted trickle filter in a little canister (because I have  ) for the primary reason of lowering the PH? basically would compressed/dehydrated peat still be ok/useful for lowering ph.

peat for use in the garden in not as cleaned (read safe) for use in the aquarium.
I belive aquarium peat has been irradiated to kill anything that maybe harmfull to aquatic life.

IMO don't use std peat.
