Hello everyone. I first off want to say how informative this forum is - it's an excellent reference! I'm relatively new to aquaria world but got the bug quite thoroughly. A few weeks ago I googled "bloated gourami" thinking there would be precious little to come up, but this site was immensely helpful. It was a dwarf gourami which had bloated up and I was looking for answers. Internal parasites was one answer (and also relief was provided by learning that it wasn't necessarily infectious to the other fish, at least if they didn't eat it when it died.) However, the answer that served me best was learning that it could be constipated and to try feeding peas. Who knew?! It worked! Well, it's working. His breathing is still a bit labored and he's hanging at the bottom a lot more than usual, but he's very much better. I had added too much "tonic" at the last water change and I think that's what did it.

My new concern is that one of my smaller pearl gouramis (same tank) has a bump only on it's left side. It's smaller than a peppercorn. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any help!

(Sorry for the long read to get to the problem, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciated finding the site.)

I can't really tell for sure just from a description, maybe if you post a picture it would help. If not, you should quarantine it and try to keep the water clean as possible.

Being bloated can be constipation, swim bladder, dropsy to internal parasites.
The lump does it look like its filled with fluid or does the lump look hard.
Once a fish has increased breathing they tend not to make it.

Sorry, I didn't get a message that anyone had written so had not checked back for a while.

I tried to get a picture but just couldn't. It was a pimple looking thing, not like bloating or dropsy. It was a very specific bump only on it's left side. It is now resolving itself. The "pimple" has gone back down and all that's left of the incident is a tiny darkish spot, as if the scales are a bit disrupted. The fish never seemed uncomfortable, no increased breathing, not swimming oddly. So do fish get pimples??? This would've been a totally humiliating one! Couldn't miss it! Everyone else was still nice to "her," though. :-}
