When i was doing my water changes last nigh,t this happened:

I can easily get a replacement part, but was wondering what could have caused this to break in such a way.

Had the exact same thing happen to mine, and have spoken to a bunch of people with the same issue.

All I can say, IMHO, is defective/cheap components.

Maybe stress or it was defective .[ over tightening ?]

You can replace that with standard garden hose fittings [brass shut off valves ] the pythons threads are the same size as garden hose threads. Try looking in a hardware store or a home center , it is likely to cost less than a pet shop .

It looks as if there was too much of a side load on the fitting. Are you stretching the Python to its' limits? If so, putting too much of a load will crack the plastic fittings. I'd probably do what lucky mentioned.

I believe your local Pet Smart stocks replacements on those, at least mine does.
