just became an american *play dramatic music*
Well she was very fragile and breathing was getting harder with her respiratory problem(non-curable) i just didn't know so soon.

I had just gotten back from my amazing vacation and was not at all emotionally prepared to find my precious rescued girl even skinnier and lying down weak when i returned. The second i was told by my room mate and briefily looked in i started calling vets to see if i could have her put down. All were closed and i just don't have the heart to put down a mammal, especially one so close to my heart.

So i decided i would take Paris out for myself and see how she was. When i went to approach her in her dome(she was laying down) she came out and bite me quite meaningfully which she has never done to any soul which got me crying not because it hurt but because most likely she did it due to pain or her mind just wasn't right at the time. I knew this wasn't my girls normal behaviour so i go grab some baby food(a fav. treat) and she just started scarfing that down so I gave her a moist cat treat and picked her up and she eagerly ate bits of fresh apple as she sat in my hand peacefully. Soon after, my girls common licks and kisses came flowing in and i kissed her back just like old times. I think she was unable to eat the regular hard kibble, lab blocks, etc that my room mate was feeding her so when she got the more softer food she ate and ate. On a closer inspection i noticed small bugs(fleas?) in her fur(something she did not have before my trip) and quickly rushed her for a bath with a very small bit of salt to kill the bugs. I let her run around on the couch and she showed some energy and i thought oh good she's not nearly looking as bad as in the cage earlier. I went to return her to the cage and she clug to the bars begging to be let out again so i put my hand in and she eagerly climbed back on. We cuddiled and kissed eachother then i returned her back with a new clean blanky for a good nights rest.

I return home from work this evening from an okay days work and the body of a rat laying in that infamous ill position caught my eye. My heart sank as i slowly walked towards the stiff body of the most loving, intelligent rat I'd ever known laying on the cage floor...*pauses for tears*. I called my room mate crying, I just couldn't pick her body up. I finally got the nerve and wrapped her up gently and put her in the freezer to have a proper burial later.

Possibly a combination of the fleas I found on her, starvation, suffocating, respiratory problem or all. I know i gave her atleast another year of life then if she had stayed as a feeder at that disgusting pet store I bought her from but the guilt wrenching feeling that i couldn't do the humane thing and have her put down kills me. How long was she suffering during the night? Or did she suffer at all and just pass away in her sleep?

Anyways i know many of you(especially those who said you never even thought rats were cute until they met Paris) would like to know about her. Here's some of her more famous shots and many thats got nominated for POTM. Thanks for making her feel like an animal that was loved and not hated for once.

Paris....you're always in my heart and you'll always be my baby girl. Goodbye and see you on the other side.

Wow im VERY sorry for your loss :( :/ :byebye: and i didnt really even know who paris was until after reading this post. I 2 was one of those people who didnt thikn rats were cute until seeing Paris. I think that you did as much as you can and im sure she lived a very happy life!

I am so sorry about Paris, I know how it feels to lose a animal It seems like they are a piece of your heart just falls out when you lose one. I feel for you and I am sure Paris knows you loved him dearly. :byebye: Little Paris :rip: :rip: :rip: little fellow.

Thank you guys for those kinds words, they are muchly appreciated. I must say my eyes burn from being so dried out. Been awhile since i cried that much and it's weird how all these emotions really drain you and leave you feeling tired out ya know?

How sad for you to lose your friend. My heart really goes out to you as i lost 3 beautiful rats within a month of each other through old age and they all went slowly so i feel your pain at not getting Paris to a vet. I was holding one of my rats when she did finally pass and it was peaceful in the end as i'm sure thats how Paris passed.
You have your memories and lovely photos to cherish. :-(

Paris was a very beautiful rat and I am so sorry for your loss. You had a wonderful connection with her and a very special time with her the night she died. I believe she passed on peacefully with a full tummy, a full heart and knowing that she was very much loved. RIP lil' Paris :byebye:

That's such a shame. Poor paris. I feel terrible. That picture of her with her face out of her cage is the picture that made me want to get a rat to begin with. And now I have one.

Sorry to hear about Paris. :byebye: She was a lucky rat for having someone that cared about her as you. Take care of yourself and keep your chin up.

Snowy, it was your pics of rats that made me consider keeping one in the future myself. I even found a Rat Rescue here in Arizona. I'm sorry for your loss, but take heart and know that you gave her the best final year of her life in a happy, safe, loving environment where she was able to thrive for a time. Given that she was originally slated as a feeder, well, she beat a fair number of odds in her short little life. Just always remember her fuzzy little face, how she touched your life and how she touched the lives of those that oohhh'd and ahhhh'd over her adorable little pictures here on the forum and found a spot in their hearts for rats too. RIP little Paris, you'll be missed here.

Wow thanks for all the replies tff crew. Today i wrapped her up in some nice formal material, tucked my letter to her inside and we burried her on a small hill that has flowers growing on it. Said my goodbyes and that's that i suppose.

I'm also very touched that Paris could imprint such a strong impression on you both MAM and JackDemp528. It's very hard to get people to liking rats, let alone owning one. I'm sure you will be entertained and will soon find out how close such a small creature can get to your heart.

I really promote owning a rat, especially if you want a rodent that will actually acknowledge you back and WANT to interact with you. Rats are far more intelligent then credited for and love to bond with humans, mostly because they form social structures(and i do mean social) within themselves. I'll never regret owning a rat, maybe one day I'll get back to it but as for now I don't think there's a match/replacement for Paris.

Thanks again for caring guys. :*)
