I'm that waiting period dwarf Cichlid breeders have to deal with. My Parananochromis gabonicus laid eggs, and have now been guarding long enough to be caring for larvae inside their dug out cave. It's a half coconut with a door, and now has sand heaped all around it. Both parents are guarding, with the female usually inside the cave and the male hovering around it, chasing off tetras.

(hardness 80 tds, pH 6.6, temp 24c). Homemade soldier fly and shrimp food, white worms, artemia and insect pellets from Tropical. 75 gallon tank, well filtered with 30% changes every 7-10 days. Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus and B. greeni Moon tetras, several more female gabonicus and assorted (extra) Aphyosemion females as companion fish. Lots of plants. Sand and pool sand substrate.

I don't have photos, as I've been waiting for this rather plain fish to pop a little of the colour it had when we caught it in 2023 (mine are F-1). It came from a dark blackwater creek, in permanent twilight from the forest canopy, and was a rich coppery colour with black patterning on some scales. It was handsome but not a beauty.

In a more lit up aquarium with less tannin stained water, it's a dull little fish, still about half the size of the ones we caught and colourless. Patience, patience, but if they lead out fry, I'll take pictures. Wish me luck it's a fish I thought I could never see live, let alone breeding!

You know you're a fishnerd when you get excited about fish people walking into the room would question why anyone would keep...

But tonight, my Parananochromis ornatus transformed their colours, and a female has her breeding tube out. My one eyed male is looking as good as a one eyed male ornatus can.

Something's in the air. Things are happening with some previously uncooperative Cichlids. I think it's the room warming up ever so slightly as it's been sealed up against the coming winter and the dehumidifier is throwing heat. But we've also had a series of extremely windy, blustery days, and that could also contribute. It is rain season where they come from.
