Hi all,

For a few days now one of my male guppies started behaving strangely - hanging out in the same spot near the surface, not moving very much (no shimmies though) and has lost a lot of colour. Today his tail is split almost in two.

We have him in a breeding net as our QT tank is currently in use and he is swimming around in it quite slowly. We've offered him food and he's taken a little.

Tank is a Fluval Roma 200 which is only a week old, it currently has the contents of our old 65l (guppies, danios and platies) with the old (cycled) and new (partially seeded) filter. It is testing 0s for nitrite, ammonia and nitrate and we've been doing PWCs this week. Most recent additions was a shoal of Cardinal tetras from our regular LFS.

Could it just be the stress of moving home that has done it? Or could it be something more sinister which we could medicate? My husband reckons he may just be old and on the way out although he's not particularly big for a guppy?

Could something have bullied him?

There are five other male guppies in there so it's possible that the split tail was from him being picked on by the others, they're all horrible bullies! I don't know if it is connected to the fact that he's pale and lethargic, it probably just made it easier for him to be caught.

It looks like I have another going the same way. Help!! Is there anything I can safely medicate with, I am guessing internal parasites as no visible outward signs bar those mentioned above. Would you agree?

Do an immense water change with proper dechlorination. If you have multiple fish showing signs of distress, stop messing about and do that water change. Medication is for identified diseases only, any other use of it is ill advised.
