I want a pair of Bolivian rams (2 pairs if possible in a 30 gallon but I doubt it) so what's the best way to go about this? Buy 6 and wait till they pair or just buy two in hopes I have a male and a female?

6 I would say, i personally found them difficult to pair, wouldnt put two pairs in anything less than 4-5ft though

You could pick a really nice male, and then switch out the females until they pair.

This may help you. A member shared it with me and helped me a whole lot. It's a real good video about sexing blue rams.

Yes that did help a lot. Also should I add these to my tank last or does it not matter? I'll be doing the pairing in my qt I think then adding the pair to my main after qt. My LFS has about 10 in right now and they're $5.50 each so I wanna get them asap.

I've never bread them so excuse my ignorance. Would it be easier to pair them in the larger tank where they have more space? Then once they start to spawn move them to the qt tank? Maybe just put a handful of them in together and watch their behavior for a month and see if two show interest in spawning, then move them. I've also read that they will spawn more frequently and successfully in soft acidic water.

Oh I'm not looking for them to spawn really if they do, great!, but I don't care if they do or not, I just want a pair.

hmm.. I have two rams. One I guess is a wild blue ram. The other is just a blue ram. Is there a benefit other than offspring to having a paired couple?

Nah I just think that they'd maybe stay closer together or something and make a better sight. :good: not really sure.

You may enjoy trying to breed them at some point. I would want a pair for that reason.
