i want to paint the back of 1 of my empty tanks black, is it ok to use normal gloss or has it got to be a certain kind of paint ???
sorry if iput this in the wrong place wasn't sure where to put it lol
thanks

Best thing to use is spray paint. Second best is latex paint applied with a roller. A paint brush won't work unless you do a clear base coat.

Wouldnt spray paint produce odors in the tank that could be toxic to the fish? I know that you could probably clean it out.

yeah i'm a bit concerned that the spray may end up in the tank. was thinking more of using a roller so no brush marks.
i've sorted it now anyway i didn't realised the back of my old background was black  so just stuck that on for now.
thanks for the replies thou :good:

ive never painted my tanks before,
but if you was using a spray can couldnt you mask up the top of the tank with newspaper etc to stop any overspray/odors getting in the tank?

also what type of spray paint is best?

chris

I painted the back of my tank with normal black gloss and a paint brush. It looks great has been there over a year and no problems with it.

I assume you were planning to paint the how side of the tank ????

As someone else said, just tape paper over the top of the tank and it should be fine. Assuming you aren't painting with the fish or anything inside, it won't be an issue, as the propellant quickly dissipates into the surrounding air.

Now, it will generate nasty volatile organic compounds as it drys, but any paint will do this. It's best to leave the tank fish-less for a few weeks after painting, but not essential.

yeah piper just the outside of the tank.

Any solvent. After all, it is empty!
So long as it (the tank) remains empty intil the paint is completely dry, there should be no problem.

I'm planning on doing the same on my next tank.

I did mine years ago black with brush and paint. when I wanted it off few years later it was right bugger of a job with nitramorz and scraper!!!

Another idea is to get a background forthe back of the tank.

yeah already done that squidman but my backgrounds never like to stick for me don't think they ever have lol.
plus my big tank is being converted over to salt water so want it to look perfect lol
