You shouldn't add salt to freshwater tanks; it can be a very effective medication though, so it's good to have on stand-by

I went out and bought and API test kit 
Ammonia- .25
NO2- .25
NO3- between 0 and 5
 
I then did a 25% water change. 
 
I thought fish were supposed to be timid creatures, when I put my cup in to get water for the water test they insisted on swimming into the cup and had to keep dumping them out.
