We are having problems keeping oxygen in our tank. We have a bubble bar in the back of the tanks that produces a lot of bubbles and breaks the surface but when we turn off the bubbles our fish seem to be gasping for air. We turned it off last night at around 5pm and by this morning 9am all of the fish were at the top of the tank, it looked like they were all trying to escape. We immediately turned on the air and even slapped the top of the water to break the surface (was told that’s how to get air in fast) Right now we are emptying our 50% of the water to see if something in the water is stopping air from staying in. How can I keep the water oxygenated? Any ideas?

Leave the bubble bar on?

(Sorry if that seems an arsey answer!)

i hate the bubble wands i feel they wear out and clog really easy, i have had very good luck with things like bubble stones (they are small round pads that go under the gravel)

Yes of course I can leave it on but I've had aquariums off and on for over 20 years and have always been able to turn off the bubbles for a day or two. We normally turn them off during feeding time. But with this new tank we have not been able to do that. We think it has something to do with the water.

have you tested the water recently there may be another problem?
also what size is the tank, which filter do you have and what fish do you have?

these questions will help us to rule out other things

for now you can move the outflow of the filter to above the waters surface, this should increase the levels of oxygen in the water much more than by using an average air pump.
