Like the topic title & description says; is the average mouth of an otocinclus big enough to eat just born guppy fry? I'm thinking of getting one because that is a reccommended as a scavenger.

I am going to get guppys in a few days' time, MAYBE add a otocinclus, depending on peoples answers and other stuff. My aim is to breed the guppys and other live bearers in a floater/breeding net.

They have small mouths and they would not be able to eat guppy fry pysically and also I very much doubt they would want to.

You should have more than one oto as they are sociable. I have 4 and they are always together.

:D

I have 3 in one tank, and they never take notice of one another. I have one in another tank and he's quite fine.

Yes, I know.

However, the majority do socialise together and perhaps yours do too, when you are not looking. ;)

Most plecs do like company and most small fish are schooling. It makes sense.

I guess I should've stated that differently: With all the otos I've had in all the tanks I've had, I've never known them to socialize with one another. I've heard the same from several others.

You didn't mention how big your tank is, but otos are outstanding little cleaners. I'm sure they wouldn't eat guppy fry, and I think they're a blast to watch.

I've got 3 in each of my 10 gal tanks. Mine do zip around the tank together. I'd go for 3-4, (again, depends how big your tank is).

Good luck! :)

i have three.
my blind albino corys (lol) chase there refection in the glass all the time and one of my ottos is always mimiking there movements,

I have three, and they do notice each other. They also have their own seperate leaves/bogwood to perch on.

My Oto's do eat meat on top algae, but they wouldn't hurt a living fish. :D

When I had my Otos they pretty much went about their own business as well. Now Corys on the other hand... they definitely like to socialize with their own kind.
