How can you tell when an Oscar is a male or female and how many can you keep in a 55 gallon I know they can get pretty big so I was just wondering.

Males get bigger and have more pointed dorsal and anal fins.

With a 55g you have the VERY minimum for one Oscar - general rule to work with is 1 Oscar = 75 Gallons, 2 Oscars = 150 gallons and then 50 gallons for each extra one. Thats not for total stocking but just when keeping them together or with similarly sized and tempered cichlids.

Oh okay because I was thinking of keeping oscars after my fish finish the rest of there lives lol I've always been interested in these fish and curiosity has gotten the best of me

Wills as usual has it 100% spot on :) all I will add is they need a lot of filtration as they are messy eaters and also as they get so big they produce a lot of waste. I had a single tiger Oscar on its own in a 125 gal for a while but decided to try something a bit different so later rehomed him. He was only around 7 inches. They grow at a rate of around 1 inch per month if fed correctly, maintenance is done weekly and given the right tank size.

They have great personalitys though and they interact with their owners. They will however eat anything that fits in their mouths so tank mates can be challenging lol

Yeah lol I'll probably get 2 baby oscars and when they get big enough transfer them into my then hopefully 125 gallon fingers crossed hopefully the gf will allow it in the house lol

Just be sure to move them before they get stunted :good:

And my gf has just allowed (can't believe I'm saying that lol) me to get a 180 gal/210 US gal tank. It's 8ft x 2ft x 2ft, custom made from ND Aquatics. It will be ordered as soon as I get the 2 fluval fx5 filters... I'm excited to say the least lol

I will be keeping my 40gal and 125 gal. Il either keep my flowerhorn in the 125 or move him and my Ornate Bichir to the 8foot and do something else with the 125... Decisions lol

Hope you do get the 125 you want :good:

Imagine Twizzlers sitting on the bottom of your tank and that will give you some semblance of what an adult oscar will put in your tank :)

Depends on the food. Them cichlid pellets will leave em twizzler color too!
