We`ve recently had to rehome our parrot fish due to oscar aggression.....

What i was wondering was could an oscar cope with a tank full of malawis, as they are aggressive chiclids ect or would hejust over run them?

and also could an oscar copw with the hard water and high ph?

Depending on what Malawi's you get, I'd fear more for the Oscar as they are just big babies really.

its just a very vague idea at the moment, so an oscar can cope with a ph of say 7.8 or so?
and as fr the type of malawi we`d need to do some research

Well it would be fine with the pH, not perfect but good enough.

The dietary needs of the Oscar and Malawi's however wouldn't be compatible in general. Yes some are carnivorous but the majority are vegetarians or at most omnivores. The Oscar needs a high protein diet which will not be good for the Malawi's.

Also the issue of fish not being able to understand the warning signs of aggressive between the Oscar and Malawi.

Then finding a fish that can stand up for itself against the Oscar whilst not attacking the Oscar. The Oscar will be an open water swimmer going over all the different fishes territories.

Not all Malawi's would eg. a yellow lab would not "woop" an Oscar, most likely the other way round in that case, due to the huge size difference.

Yes an oscar would be bigger, but with it being slow moving it is more of a gentile if not clumbsy giant. I've heard of cons beating up on o's twice their size so I think people can tend to overestimate the abilities of o's to fend off attackers

jayjay has covered the most important point - diet. Aggression could be an issue and it's debatable who would come off worse - it also depends a great deal on the Malawi species involved.

Diet however makes it a non-starter IMO - the requirements couldn't be more different, even with Malwai omnivores.

iam trying to decide on what to have with my oscars n the man at my fish shop which specialise in malawis said a frontosa would work fine with oscars so iam toying with the idea.......but watching all of his tanks with malawis in i wouldnt really go with any others they seem to quick and aggresive
