I'm leaning towards a 6 foot tank with a capacity of 135 gallons. I'm thinking of getting one oscar, and am looking for suggestions on tankmates. From searching the forum and different sites, I came up with silver dollars and clown loaches. Do these sound like good mates for oscar? If so, how many could go in a tank that size with one oscar? Or what other kind of fish would you suggest? Thanks.

Thanks for the tips LMO!

So, let's say I get the Oscar first, watch it for a while, then decide to add silver dollars. Would there be a danger of the oscar eating the silver dollars? I heard oscars grow fast, and will eat whatever they can fit in their mouths. The silver dollars I see in lfs are rather small ... or would the silver dollars be too fast for the oscar?

A nice group of Pictus catfish would look great with an oscar....plus they are fast growing and seem to be able to handle there own..whatever you decide im sure it'll work out mike :D

Thanks for all the info from everybody. I'll research the fish you suggested. I am soooo looking forward to this endeavor!

I would suggest letting the silver dollars grow out in another tank if they are too small.
Ooooh! I guess that means I'll have to get yet another tank! :hey:

The pictus catfish as tankmates is not a good idea, pictus cats rarely exceed 6" in captivity and have a slim profile so the oscar could attempt to eat them, which would probably result in the death of both fish when the catfish sticks its pointed pectoral fins out and into the inside of the oscars mouth. I would suggest one of the larger pimeloid catfish species like Sorubim lima Pimelodus ornatus or Pimelodus albofasciatus.

We have our oscars in a tank together (4 of them) approx 6 inches each...they share thier tank with a parrot fish, a pleco, a raphael catfish, and another type of catfish! IF you get silver dollars OR tinfoil barbs, PLEASE be sure he is as large as, if not larger than you oscar's mouth!! Our oscars ate our tinfoil barbs (very expensive snack!) We also HAD 2 south american dragonfish that lived peacefully with ours (but we lost them while on vacation due to the filter shutting down) It is all peding on your fishes personality..but these are some suggestions!! Warning with the parrot fish....often, when purchased, they sell for high prices due to the GORGEOUS COLORS (we were fooled too) they are dyed!! they turned " gold/orange" on us!!!

EDITED is a good site to ask theres lots of oscar specialists that are willing to give advice and i heard u chould either keep 1 oscar or 6+

PLEASE DO NOT ADVERTISE COMPETING SITES
