So I was doing a water change on my 120 gallon and I noticed my parrot fish was attacking me every chance she could get. usually she will try to nip at my hand once or twice and then leave me alone, but this time she was attacking my hand repeatedly and even trying to attack me through the glass when I got close to her pot.

I looked inside and there are hundreds of little brown/tan eggs. The past two times she has layed them they have been white. There are a few white ones, but most of them are the brownish color.

Is there anyway these could actually hatch? :hyper:

I'm pretty sure that if they are brownish yellow, means they are fertilized. Could be wrong but thats my understanding. There is a pair in there right?

They are indeed a brownish/tan color with a few really white ones.

The fish I have in there are a tiger oscar and a parrot.

They have paired up I suppose and now she is laying eggs. I have had them ever since they were both young and my oscar is about 8 inches now and the parrot fish is about 4 or 5.

Well i don't think they would cross breed but who know, you could have a new really freaky species on your hand if the Oscar did fertilize the parrot's eggs. Thats really weird :fun: :p

Yeah I didn't think they would breed either, I bought the parrot fish because I didn't want my oscar to be alone. But she has layed eggs a few times and all of the times they have been white and now they are light brown/tan.

I bought a whole bunch of feeder guppies to feed them and the next night she had layed eggs.

I just noticed, it's a blood parrot... I thought they were unfertile because of the cross-breed that they are? Maybe the eggs she is laying are just already bad..... but thats weird, the only way the yoke would grow (which is most def what the brown/yellow color is) is if the egg is fertilized....weird

I heard the males were only unfertile, and that the females could still lay eggs? I am not sure at all haha I am so confused.

The Oscar has been snacking on the eggs and the parrot fish attacks him everytime he gets closer to them.

Like I said...weird.....o well, maybe if the Oscar keeps grabbing mouthfuls of them, then you won't have to worry about any little babies

I checked on the eggs today and there were maybe about 20 left and the parrot fish was picking at them, eating them.

I tried to save the few she had left just to see if they would hatch, but I think they are dead. They are a cream color, not as dark as the other ones were and then there are 2 or 3 bright white ones which I am sure are dead.

:/ Who knows. Maybe one day they will hatch.

parrots are hard to get fertile eggs from.
if you would have sved the brown eggs fro mthe aprents nibbling then they very probably would ahve hatched :)
better luck next time,

white - infertile.
brown/tan - fertile

you gotta get some to hatch then sell them as a new species! usually the more times they spawn the more likley the fish are to raise the fry correctly so lets keep hoping! :good:
