Hi everyone :)

i just ended up buying a 450liter tank for my baby Oscars so they can grow up nice and strong.

I noticed in the local shop they really like digging and making a mess, so what would be the right size gravel/stones to put in ???

i have some super small gravel/stones i got from the beach i really like but i am worried they will just end up spitting it everywhere....know what i mean !!!!.

anybody have lots of experience with these beautiful fish ???? what is best? rocks ? type of wood to put in the tank ? african? mangrove etc....???

thanks in advance

Only use an inch of small gravel - if you give them the big stuff or small pebbles they can do damage when they spit it!
I would just get one or two big pieces of bogwood. You need something an adult Oscar will not throw around.

Oscars are not particular about decor and the choice is all about preferences. Use the wood you like, use the subtrate you like. With rocks just go with something big enough not to be moved and nothing sharp since they can sometimes be a little clumsy and will do some sparring in the future. Oscars do prefer open space though, except when they're juvenile, so keep the decore modest.

thankyou very much diademhill and freddyk :D

i am still in the process of setting it all up ( actually still waiting for my filter to arrive ) i was recommended a strong filter that cycles x4 amounts of water that the tank holds, so i found a super deal on the internet for an Eheim 2080 pro 3, that pumps out 1700liters per hour for my 450 tank, with two intakes and one outlet of filtered water. I imagine i can reduce the output !!!

Is this filter overkill for my tank ????

the Oscars are super messy ... i love these fish and just want the best for them.
