First off i'm very keen on the company known very well in our trade as "Tropica", i can't imagine a company so dedicated telling fibs about plants so i take their information as law, basically. But lately i have come across a stumbling block about a certain plant, Vallisneria in general. This confusion has only been increased by my own fluttering and faffing around with research. I've been told, i've read and found only evidence that it originates from Asia, yet i keep being told to use it in a South American Biotope, why? All the evidence leads to it being Asian, and yet so many biotope write-ups give Vallisneria as main criteria alongside Cabomba and some Swords plants. Is it South American also? Does it exist natively in South America? Or is it just Asian as i suspect?

Can someone shed some light. I'm creating a South American Biotope, with the only foreigners being 5 true SAE's, everything else is South American.

According to tropica,

vallis americana gigantea - asia
vallis american 'mini twister' - southeast asia
valis american 'natans' - southeast asia
vallisneria caulescens - australia
vallis nana - austraila
vallis spiralis - asia

It also says that they aren't suited for a General hardness of below 4, or a pH less than 6. So not suited at all really! Where did you read that they were suited for american biotopes?

A few places i've looked have stated Vallisneria as Amazon/South American - which confuses me as i go by Tropica always (usually). If you check out this link here you'll see if states in the respective section to use Vallis in the "biotope". I just find it odd, as this detracts away from the entire principle of the word biotope

If its Asian, which i thought it was, then i shall discard it and stick with Sagittaria Subulata as a grass-like plant in my Biotope.

There are a lot of environments in North, South, & Central America that would suit Vallis just fine, so be careful with the generalization. South American biotopes are not exclusively softwater environments by any means. It depends on what type of South American biotope the OP wants to create. It grows as an aquatic weed in South FL and Vallisneria americana also grows in the US. There are several North American species too. Other species are found throughout the world. The Baensch atlases Vol 1-3 has some great information on Vallis species.

Just my two cents on Vallis.

So it does occur in North and South America in select places. I'm not creating a specific biotope, i've just generalised it to South America (roughly). So including Vallis in my tank wouldnt be against my plan of it being South American seeing as it grows in places on the other side of the lake, so to speak.

Alls i want to know is if it would be a foreign invader in my tank set-up. If not i'll happilly keep it in there :)

Gooo on, I want a biotope of a select stretch of river

all the ones tropica sell apparently originate from asia but I do imagine they grow in plenty of places. Atleast you can fill it with echinodorus!
