Anyone kept these before think they are also known as mozzies

yes and they are superb fish

I;ve had a couple of pairs over the years. They breed so easily and have a decen;t personality as fish
Only issue is the aggression from male to female once they have already spawned, you need a space for the female to recouperate from the randy male

The male colours up amazingly when spawning and mine never displayed aggression to tank mates

brilliant fish

Mozambique mouthbrooders, yeah nice fish seen them a few times but with an adult size of 40 inches!!! I was put off, they are also one of the hardiest cichlids around as its found in freshwater, brackish and sometimes marine waters around Madigascar (spelling)

40 inches seriously!!!No disrespect but I have to say I doubt that

The adults I kept at maxed out at about 9 inch for the male and 7 inch for the male as there was a sizeable difference between the sexes in the three pairs I;ve kept over the last 20 years.

A google search seems to suggest about 15inch maximum size

hmmmmm it does look like I am in the wrong here but I am sure I have seen these listed as 40 inches in the wild somewhere but I have to admit I cant find references anywhere but I have seen some listing it as 40cm perhaps some confusion on my part so apologies there....

The reason I was so adamant is there are a pair at a pet shop near me that is just over run with big fish that just have no hope of ever and I mean ever being rehomed as it is in the middle of no where and 2 of the fish in there are a pair of these in the pink morph and they have been there literally years as in 4-5 years and are in a 4x1x1 tank so I got the name from the owner which was mozambique mouth brooders and spent a while researching which is where the 40 inch figure came from. I have since seen them somewhere else for sale and avoided for the same reason.

sorry for misleading nature of my last post

I woulldn;t be put off mate they are fantastic fish. I;d liken them to oscars in the personality stakes and in my experience a lot less aggressive
