So I've been looking for a fish to live in harmony with my corydoras in my 20 gallon, I recently moved the cardinals to the 30. I really like the more exotic looking fish, as I was thinking of getting hillstream loaches (thankfully not) now I have my eye on glass catfish haha. I'd first seen them at a museum in SF years back, and saw them for the first time while getting supplies at my lfs. I didn't buy any because I was going to do research..so they get about 4-5" they love plants and are shy. Well my 20 gallon is well filtered has lots of plants and only corydoras...I know they like schools but I'm sure 4-5 would be fine, plus there's nothing to stress them out..now it comes to ordering....I didn't want to buy them at the lfs as I wanted some opines first, but when I asked if they could hold guess what, they were sold out the next day...I'm going to be ordering off of liveaquaria.com. Are they good shippers or will I open a box of milky white glass catfish...I was also thinking of ordering peacock gudgeons from them but that's another story..

I've never ordered from them myself, but a close friend of mine gets nearly all his marine fish from them - and inverts.  He's very pleased.  They have very good customer service if one does come dead (or doesn't acclimate well).  I think he's only lost one batch of fish from them... and he's ordered quite a lot from them.

That's good to know, some of their prices do seem expensive though...35$ shipping, 12$ for a single red crystal shrimp...

Shipping is always the downside of ordering online. I check the shipping before I check the actual price, because if shipping isn't free it'll probably outweigh the cost of the fish.

The only thing I've gotten online were my cherries, which were all alive when I opened up the package. I've eventually lost half of them over the course of a few months just one randomly, I'm just guessing old age because a lot of them were full grown when they arrived. Though by now they've bred enough to the point where my initial 12 has become 30+. I'm still on the look out for more, just for some genetic variation. Sometimes I like to look for plants.

I ordered glass catfish online and they arrived remarkably healthy (much healthier than the ones at the LFS). I'd up the school a bit to at least 7, since I've read they tend to just pine away and die in smaller schools. I ordered 9 and I thought I'd have the same problem - they all schooled into one sport and didn't start eating for a couple of days. Now they're reasonably active, moving around the tank and plants and are right little gluttons.

yeah i really like glass cats, and it seems that they don't have really any special requirements.  I have a HOB on the 20g, so not much current, I have a good amount of plants too like anubias, crypts, baby tears, amazon swords, and different mosses (flame, java)  oh and also dw but im not sure if they like that.  How big do they normally get?  from what ive read some people are saying 4" while others say 7"..

oh yeah i forgot to say, would 6 glass cats, and 8 sterbais be too much in a 20g?  i know it sounds like a TON but i either do 25% every 4 days or 20% every 2-3.  i also vaccum sand very well plus all of the plants..

The glass cats really need massive schools to cope with their sensitivity. Maybe 9 glass and 6 sterbais would be better if your water changes are adequate.

I could do water changes everyday if necessary, but it seems like at a certain point that wouldn't cut it. Do you think that would work, and if so how much water do you think I should change and when? I was thinking of ordering more than I eventually wanted because the one time long ago when I ordered fish it went very badly, and had to end up paying restocking fees...I was thinking of well, ordering about 9, assuming 2-3 wouldn't make it, but if this website can actually ship well and isn't a headache to get your money back maybe I'll order 9 planning on keeping 9. Still though, it seems like 9 fish that are at least 4-5" plus a bunch of corys in a 20 gallon is a ton as I don't have any special filtration...another thing, wouldn't I end up just killing all of my fish if I added 7-9 glass cats at once? Wouldn't that at least double my bio load and spike the ammonia? Would doing large (50%) water changes for the next week or so help at all? Thanks

Sorry but has everyone else missed this?

Hate to say it but a 20g is very very small for glass cats they are big fish as adults. And 4-5 inch fish have no business being in a 20g. Your really looking at a 50 gallon + 4 foot tank for these. Its not really down to water changes or quality here its just tank length.

Really? That's disappointing :(. I mean, it seems like if I could keep the water quality up then they'd be happy right? I mean, my tank is literally a jungle, and I know they like to just hover a lot of times, and I have tall plants as well like amazon swords..plus asmfar as stress goes they wouldn't have anything to cope with besides themselves as I've never seen my corys bother any other fish.

Your water quality has nothing to do with it. You could have absolutely pristine water, but that doesn't make the tank any bigger. They need space in addition to good water.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought these guys weren't huge on swimming? I guess what I'm trying to say is if they don't swim much it seems like I could meet their needs as far as a habitat goes.

Holy cow! I'd always assumed they only grew 2-3 inch. Apparently they can be 6 inches o_O ! Sorry for the confusion. Glass cats aren't right for your tank.

Yes, I know some species of glass cats do get 6", the ones I'm looking at are 4" max, which is still large.
