now Binky has sadly departed i'm trying to decide what to do with his old tank.

I'm also taking over Ian's little tank so I have a 5g PK aquacube and a nearly 8g betta lifespace tank.

i'm in two minds what to do

the 5g currently houses a CT betta splendens

i really want some microrasbora galaxy and some of the smaller cories (hastatus or harsbora (sp) not decided)

the 8g tank is almost jungly in it's decor, i want it pretty heavily planted

the 5g i'm planning a very simple design to make the tank look really spascious when it's actually quite small. I think having a 'big' fish in there would kind of spoil the effect and it would look better with the galaxies and cories in there.

however i think it'd also put the 5g tank a bit overstocked if i did that and moved rincewind to the 8g

i've thought about swapping my aquascaping ideas around but cos the 8g is relativley tall the planned scape for the 5g wouldn't work in there

:/

i'm not sure what to do and who should go where... what do you all think?

get a load of shrimps or a crab?

nah we've loads of shrimps, i'm not keen on crabs.

i really want my galaxies and cories just not sure how to fit it all in.

:/

Sorry to hear about all your recent troubles Miss Wiggle

I don't think a bit of overstocking - if it's with Galaxy Rasboras and tiny cories - is going to be too much of a problem, especially if the tank is heavily planted. I have 12 pygmy cories, 3 honey gouramis and 6 male guppies in a heavily planted 10 gal tank and everything has been fine. I very rarely see more than about six pygmys at once - they spend their time rooting about amongst the plants. I've never kept any of the other tiny cories - but I guess they're all about the same size and they can't be producing much waste.

And if you think things aren't quite right - you can always swop the tanks over at a later date. :good:

yeah i'm thinking 6 galaxies and 4 pygmy cories in the 8g tank should be fine, but i'd really like to put them in the 5g but i think that's simply too much.

i'll put them in the 8g and leave rincewind in the 5g, if i decide he looks really wrong in the 5g i'll put him with the cories in the 8 and the microrasbora in the 5g.

just realised binky's tank's nearly 10g not 8

much better!

What the footprint of your 8G tank? You said its quite tall.
I am eventually going to add some corys to my tank and have numerous q's running aroung in my head. Depending on the type of cory I get, I may be over the 1"per gallon guideline, but with adequete filtration surely the footprint of the tank is the most important factor when stocking these fish? Would you be able to stock more corys in a 20g long than a 20g high?
Sorry to hear about your recent loss

not 100% sure of the footprint, it's a betta lifespace if anyone fancies looking it up!

depends if you have other bottom crew. if you've no one else on the floor of the tank then you can stretch the guidelines a little bit.

and yes you could get a bigger group of cories in a 20 long, but that obviously depends on what other inhabitants you have.

I'd get at least 8 pygmy cories - even if it was technically a bit overcrowded - they really love each other's company and are much more active when there's a lot of them.

8!!!

that's 13" of fish in a 9and a bit g tank with not much floor space :/

i think that's way over tbh.

maybe i'll push it up to 6. or maybe i'll just have to accept i really don't have room for them :(

 I'd tell most people "Google is your friend" but how could I refuse a womanin mourning, especially one who helps do many here :good:

Dimensions: 37cm x 28cm x 46 cm (includes depth of hood which is 8.5cm). Volume 34 litres

ha ha ha ha ha

thanks, so there's the footprint..... not big enough for 12 cories imo even pygmy ones

 I didn't say 12 for your tank - that's what I have in mine - I still reckon 8 for yours. I don't see any way that 1 inch of pygmy cory is the equivalent of 1 inch of, say, peppered cory (adult 3 ins). Have you seen them!! :fun:

It's up to you, of course, but I think sometimes people stick too religiously to the guidelines. Although active, they're not vigorous swimmers, pygmys, and they perch all over the tank, on leaves and on the bog wood. I highly recommend them for little tanks - as long as the tank is reasonably mature, the companions are peaceful and you're happy to keep the substrate clean. You could always get six and add another two - if you felt there was room, once you had them.
