Hi,
As stated yesterday my platy started giving birth. She is by herself in a 10 gallon tank dedicated to the fry once they are born. I thought I had everything under control, but since last night she has only dropped one fry. She is still very fat and has the gravid spot but she seems to be "going" a lot (sorry if this is too much but it is reddish). Should i be concerned that she has only dropped 1 in 19 hours? Thank you.

Drew

lol, paranoid eh? Nah IMO ya shouldn't be concerned. I've red it takes a while for them to have thier fry... Why? I do not know.. LOL...

Ummmm!!! not come across this reddish gravid before, but some cant take upto 24 hours to drop all their fry, if she still aint had them by the morning then there might be a problem with her passing her fry and theres nothing that can be done if thats the case, you will just have to keep your fingers crossed for her, dont mean to sound harsh but id rather give you a possible outcome and if this happens atleast you'll be prepared for the worst, will be think of you, hope she turns out to be ok.

oh and dont feed her, she could be constipated and that could be causing some sort of problem with her passing the fry, just a thought but worth not feeding her,

Thanks modaz! I figured that it might be pretty bad for her if she doesnt have them by tomorrow. Just will have to see what happens and hopefully mommy will pull through. I will make sure not to feed her this afternoon or tonight. Thanks for the advice and I will post updates when things happen or dont.....

hmm.. it took m gppie almost 2 and a half months to drop her fry.. longest period ive seen.. but.. not sure why.. hope al goes well...

Drew,
ive just googled the problem with her syptoms and it looks like she might have an internal parasites that are giving her the red gravid area, go to the LFS and ask them for something for it, she and her fry will need to be treated for it, someone had the same problem, her fish aborted 17 fry but the mother and 4 fry were saved by this. this would be a plausable reason for her holding on to her fry

Nathaniel, we are talking about once birth has begun, it really shouldnt take longer than 24 hours. There is no way your guppy gave birth for 2 and a half months  Thanks for the input though...
Modaz,
Thanks a lot for helping me, however, her gravid spot isnt red, I mean her poop is reddish  From your post it seems that you thought i meant gravid spot was red, nope it is dark blue/black. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for your continued help.

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: cant believe i googled all that and didnt have to, oh well here i go again. lol no only joking, red poop is a really good sign, mine do it alot before and during drops, i do have a platy that will drop a few fry days before she drops the rest so yours could be doing the same or shes holding on because something is stressing her out, all stats are ok yeah? a small water change would do only good and check the filters working right. is her tank next to a tv, radio, or anything noisey, a door that bangs, i know it sound stupid but vibration through the water will stress her to the point of holding her fry in, even walking past the tank does this as well.

lol, Like i said sorry about all the confusion, thanks for doing that. :good: The stats are fine, have walked by the tank a few times today to look but I will stop to make sure it isnt stressing her. Thanks for your advice and input. I am just gonna wait and see what happens in the morning. I will keep you updated. Thanks,

Drew

NO no no, I wasn't meaning that after her pregnancy began that it took that long when she started hacing them. lol. I was saying the process was that long... Then once she was ready to drop she had them within 6-8 hours.... I'm not sure why she took so long of a pregnancy..

That's what I was meaning. I was off subject.. Sry...

Well....This morning she had one more :hyper: Which brings us to a grand total of 2! This is unless she has eaten them or something but she is still fat and gravid so I doubt it as it is only her in the tank with plenty of floating plants. The 2 are doing well so far. I am just worried about mommy. Theres nothing I can do really. I dont wanna stress her out because she really needs to drop the rest of her fry. Im cheering for her to pull through all this. BTW, watching all of this take place has been so amazing, its like studz says..."Give a man a fish he will kill it, Teach a man about fish and he will breed it" So true.

Drew

Dang.. I'd be getting impatient! Tell that fish to hurry it up! :) lol... 2 fry in what? 40 hours?

I shure hope mommy is okay...
