One of my 3 Honey Gouramis looks really fat and it's hanging out at the bottom & not eating. Her color is bright, but her back is white colored where it used to be more translucent pale yellow like the other 2.

Could it be Dropsy?

First of all, I was under the impression that I had 3 male Honey's since all their dorsal fins come to a point. Could it be a pregnant female? I bought 3 of these Honey's at the same store at the same time. They are all pale yellow with the darker, brighter yellow near the anal fin. They all looked pretty much like twins (triplets) and sexing Honey Gouramis isn't nearly as positive as it is with other species.

But if it was a pregnant female wouldn't she be trying to eat more rather than not at all?

How long did it take to get fat? Is it uniform in shape, or is one side bigger? Does the fish look like it is breathing hard, opening its mouth or noticeably pumping its lower "jaw" by spreading it wider to increase water flow thru the gills? It might just be constipated, try feeding a pea.

I just noticed it's belly looking bigger 2 days ago. Both sides are perfectly even. It's always been the least active one. Breathing looks normal but it doesn't swim as fast as it used to, more like floats to wherever it wants to go. I can't feed it a pea because it's not really eating lately. I have been over feeding the tank a bit to make sure the Corries get their share................

I have some Dwarf Gouramis and they're real pigs. They'll eat until there is no more food left floating so maybe it just overate. When was the last time you saw it poop and what did it look like?

Well I was too late, he/she died this morning. Thanks for your help..................I hope whatever it was isn't contagious.

Oh geez, So sorry!

I know. I only had the 3 for less than a month or so. Still not sure whether they're males or females............. The 2 remaining ones seem to be doing great and they never bother each other or the other fish in the tank.

The worst part is that I found it stuck to the filter inlet this morning, so I reached in with my hand & removed it from the tank. I put into the toilet and flushed & I swear it moved a bit before being sucked down  Even so, it was on it's way out if it couldn't even get itself off the filter inlet. I just wish I knew what it was so I can take preventative measures for the rest of the tank.

I'm sorry to hear that, that was pretty quick.

I haven't done it myself, but I've read that there are gov. fish and wildlife offices that you can take a mysteriously dead fish to and they will perform a necropsy. Couldn't tell you where to go exactly or even if they still do such things. You can put a fish in some tank water and keep it in the fridge to preserve it.

Hope the other two are fine. There are probably thousands of things that kind happen to a fish, just like any other pet. Maybe it was just an internal problem. If it makes you feel better, I think I flushed a snail once that was possibly still alive. That was before I knew how to check for sure if they were dead  At least you KNEW your fish was either dead or about to be.

Thanks for your help. I'll keep that in mind if God forbid another fish in that tank shows similar symptoms. Unfortunately that fish hass already been flushed.

Yeah, I had the fish in my hand for a few minutes too, waiting for my son to come say a quick prayer. It didn't move at all until I put in in the bowl and flushed. I think it tried to swim a bit.............that made it all worse. It was stuck to the filter inlet pointing straight down. How do you check to see if it's alive or not? I'd think picking it out of the water by hand should be a pretty surefire way of telling.......

She was about twice as wide when viewed from the front & her/his back was very white ratrher than the translucent pale yellow it was.

Oh, and sorry about all your fish, did you check the link for Kordon Rid-Fungus?

Yes, thanks so much for the suggestion. I had to get the Ich Attack, because my petco didn't have the Fungus one. But after reading about them on the site, all of the products held a little with parasites or fungus... My cories are so active today...not completely back to normal though. They would thank you if they could :)

or petsmart.

Glad I helped! The best part about the kordon products is that they're 100% natural, herbal & whatnot. Better than adding some crazy chemicals in my opinion.

Be glad you didn't get the Rid-Fugus, it's smells freakin' nasty...............but it worked for me.

haha ICk attack smells nasty too. But Seachem Prime doesn't smell like roses. I'll deal with it lol

Just remember to use new carbon or a new filter insert with carbon when the treatment is over to clean the meds out.
