One of my favourite bettas is dying

I got Leroy a few months ago from WM. He was in a 10G with some bottom feeding fish because he was the only betta they had left. He was so ugly no one would buy him. He has really bad finnage, and a rather large set of lips. I got him because I fell in love with his ugly mug. I am pretty sure he was pretty old when I got him. He used to be quite active until 4 days ago. He stopped eating, stopped swimming everything. He is now resting on the top of his cave. I have been changing his water daily and today I lowered it to about 1" above the cave roof so he can access air easily. I am doing my best to keep him comfortable, but I am afraid it is deathwatch time.

He was the fourth betta I got, and the first to really get me going on the addiction. I will miss him very much

im sry to hear that FE, bettas do have relitivly short lives and being kept at walmart most of his probably didn't help. you did a good thing giveing him a home, im sure he has really enjoyed the time that he has been in your care.

btw, i like his lips, they give him a personality

I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping he is just under the weather right now. He has no outward signs of disease aside from lethargy and not eating. I have checked him over repeatedly for the last few days. It is hard to say goodbye, especially since he and I bonded quite a bit.

aww, FE. Sorry to hear that. Seeing him lying on that cave must be the most pathetic sight I hope he pulls through for ya. What a face

It sucks to see him sick and not know how to help him. If only fish could say "it hurts here mommy" like my 4 year old. I can take solace in the fact that he had a happy time here, and if he decides to leave, it must be his time. I was going good for a while there, no illnesses, no deaths. Then my hubby's betta died for no reason that I could see a couple of weeks ago, and now Leroy. I will continue to make him comfortable and hope for the best.

Oh FE, I'm so sorry to hear this. He looks like such a sweetie. Maybe he is just having a bad day... but I see that you haven't got a heater in his tank. Maybe you buy one (mine was really cheap, $25 - it's an AquaOne), he might just be a little chilly.

I really hope feels better soon....

My tanks are all sitting at 80-82 without a heater. It has been very warm here. I thought about that already, but it has been very hot here lately so it couldn't be that. I wish it was though. He is in a 1G bowl right now.

Awww i love those lips! I've always had some attraction to the "ugly duckling" of the crowd for fish. I would've bought him.

Unfortunately things aren't looking any better. If anything things are getting worse. He is almost on his side, laying at the surface of the water. I am considering giving him a dose of Maracyn combined with Maracyn II. I usually don't medicate unless I know there is something wrong, but I am at the point that I just want to help him. He is on death's door, and I want to make him feel better. The only reason I haven't medicated yet is because I don't like to stress them out unnecessarily. What would you guys do in my shoes?
