Hi All

One of my glowlight tetras is gasping at the surface and has swollen red gills is this gill flukes?

Water tested
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 5mg/l
Nitrite = 0

Nothing has been changed or added to this tank. All other fish are ok. Have increased the flow rate from the filter to improve airation and increased water temp from 26 to 28c.

Do i rush out to shop and get some meds to fix this if so what? or do i just do a water change and see what happens?

Cheers :drink:

Could be either flukes or gill disease or something toxic in the water.
How long have you had the fish for and any new arrivals before you noticed the symptoms?
Whats your cleaning routine as well as bacteria build up doesnt show on test kits.
What size of tank,how long have you had it running and has it cycled, what other inhabitants as well? Which filter are you using and how do you clean it out and how often?
Are you using a dechlorinator and have you used anything else in the tank.

You have a nitrite reading so i would say it's to poor water quality, i would do an immediate water change, and run an airsone for extra aeration.

I think the nitrite may be nitrate. :S

Sorry, my fish had gill flukes and they are hard to get rid of, even with using meds, i ended up striping the tank down and sterlising everything, then adding the med again, good luck.

Hi All and thanks

As only one fish is ill at the moment i will go with the water change and tank clean option.

I have had these fish for some time now and have nopt added any new fish or anything else to the tank for months.

I have a fulval 800 deep tank holding 127L of water with a fluval 204 ext filter and i clean this once a month.

Sorry for the typo is indeed Nitrate = 5mg/l

Why is only 1 fish ill and he is not flicking or rubbing just at the surface gasping with red gills sometimes he will swim down and join the other fish as normal.

Do you advise any meds if so wot??

Many thanks again. :D

I no that fish can handle parasites for a while in small doses, but once they get stressed they quick in, but not sure with gill flukes, have you added any real plants to the tank.

Hi :*

My glowlight is now having trouble swimming he cant seem to stay upright and turns upside down and floats to the surface.

Added salts and swimbladder med to the water to see if that helps. Gills still red and swollen. Hope this does not spread to other fish. :sad:

Any ideas? :no: :sad: :sad: :sick:

The one with the swim bladder sounds bad and he might no make it as it sounds like the swim bladder has progressed to far, as for the gill flukes they multilply fast and the other fish will definately get them, so you will need to medicate now, you will have to remove the bacterial med with a water change and some black carbon, good luck.
