One Guppie Died :(?

Hello, Ive today woken to a dead female guppie ? Can anyone explain why this maybe? they all seem to be fine and eating swimming etc etc and the fish witch has died seem to be fine also it was just dead on the bottom when i woken this morning ?


Iam unable to test my water right this moment has i have no test kit ( witch i need to get tomorrow has it's run out )

Ive also been told that lfs keep the guppies with aqaurium salt and id need to add some off this has they need it once they already been having it in the shops?


Im unsure why this has happend they all look healthy and eating well, and no signs off a illness with the dead fish i removed this morning ?

If you hadn't cycled your tank prior to adding fish then it is more than likely your water quality which killed the fish.

If you did cycle the tank then it could be that you just got an ill fish.

You don't need to keep the guppies with salt, not having salt wont cause any problems. And guppies are 100% freshwater fish, so I don't understand why your lfs keep them in slightly salted water either.

It could be for the anti bacterial properties that slightly salted water gives. But they should really have correct quarentine procedures and tanks for the quarentine process...not just rely on new stock not infecting the old stock because the water is a bit salty.

my tank was cycled using mature media and the water is fine, do you think it would be best do a water change has the dead fish has been in over night and may have caused a increase in nitrates ?


Also all the other fish seem to be fine and the fish witch died seem to look fine and healthy so iam unsure why , I will do a water change if iam advised to do so.

You could do a quick 30% water change (maybe 50% if you can be bothered).

But at the moment if your water readings are fine, Ie. 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrites and Less than 50ppm Nitrates.
Then just remove the dead fish and see how things go.

How long have you had that guppy? The owner of my lfs was talkin with me about his guppies, and how some batches he'll have no deaths, but others he'll have a 8/10 die right away. All depends on how long they've been at the "fish warehouse" before being shipped to the local shop.

Yea i had the fish for about 3days and they all seem to be doing fine and just one female has died this morning, all water was fine last night before i went to be has i tested and used last test, so need to get another kit tomorrow.


Ive done a 25% water change and will see how that goes, and then test tomorrow and if needbe ill do another 25% , I used my vac and removed all the poops etc etc, and all fish look ok and eating ok, and so was the female so iam unsure why this fished may have died, maybe due to being in warehouse quite a while has you said, i just dont want all the guppies to go the same way has she has, has she looked ok and so do all others?
