Hi Folks,

Ive got a group of 50 Ellioti cichlid (Thorichthys ellioti) fry around 10 weeks old which are doing great and growing well. Im getting to the point where i need to plan how best to find them new homes once big enough.

My first port of call would be a decent fish store but i was wondering if this was the best option?

Secondly how would you go about transporting 50 odd fish?

:)

In plastic bags, in a polystyrene box. It is unlikely one fish shop will take all fifty at once. What I would do is sell them ten at a time to the fish shop. That way you form a proper business relationship with the shop for other fish you may breed.

As Itiwhetu said, call a few local pet shops and see if they want any of the fish. Then bag up however many they want and take them to the shop.

Try not to feed the fish for 24 hours before you sell them. This means there will be less fish poop in the bags with the fish and they travel better.

Thank you both for the advice.

Got 2 options on fish stores id like them to go to so i might offer 10-15 each and see how they sell.

I might keep a group myself. Although my breeding pair lay eggs every couple of weeks so ill never go short

When you call the shops, don't offer them 10-15 fish. Just see if they are interested in the fish and if they are, ask them how many they want. Most shops will say 10, maybe 20, but let the shop decide on how many they want. If you have hundreds, you can mention that to the shop (ie: I have hundreds) and see if they want a lot of them for a really low price. Maybe sell 100 fish for 50 cents each.
