I just got a onate bichir its the most stunning bichir Iv seen does any one know how big they get in aquariums? I know they get around 2 feet in the wild

I dont think they get mucher bigger than 18inches in aquariums. how big is yours? what size tank do you have him in?

They are gorgeous fish and once settled make a great addition to an aquarium. They are voracious hunters though so nothing small enough to fit in its mouth in there
Easy to feed in my opinion as long as they get to the food as they can be slow at getting to the food, mines quite active and sometimes will swim in open water which looks impressive
Mines about 13 inch and very chunky and I cant confirm maximum size but I would have thought eventually they may head to 2ft and very chunky if theyve been kept well and long enough

He is only about 3" right now he is in a temporary 20 g long with my kribendsis and tiger barbs I know he will try to eat them eventually I learned this with my senegal he tryed eating all my tiger barbs they were to big to eat but coud fit there tails in his mouth he just swam around with them for a wile and spit them ou_t I thought it was kinda cool beside the fact that they were my barbs
but I will soon put him in my 55 g with my senegal bichir and others.

Hi.
Ornates are great Bichirs, and can reach 2ft in home aquaria if kept correctly.

However, your 55g is just not big enough for an Ornate.
100 - 125 gallons is more like what you will need.

Good evening

I have kept ornates up to approx 16 inches but have seen bigger so i'd say approx 20 inches would be an impressive specimen

they are a great fish but i think they could get to 2ft in a tank if the tank is large

they grow fast to 10-12inch then just put on mass

Our Ornate, Julian Bichir, was 18 inches and very handsome.
