I'm pretty confused right now. I have a molly with a gigantic fluff ball sticking out her butt. It looks like a gigantic cotton swab just hanging off her butt. It's a brown color, and is stuck to her. SHe is happy as can be, and it wasn't there yesterday. Is it an aliean? It's as big as her and she's lugging it around.

Pretty sure its some kind of fungus. I have seen that on cories before. Can you post a pic? Did she injure that area recently?

Drew

I'll post a pic tommorow, I may just take her out and quickly remove it from her. SHe hasn;t injured it that I know of. I'm thinking its some highly nutricious poop that maybe she started to poop and stopped and fungus grew on it quickly. Lol just a theory.

XDDDDDDDD

I noticed that brown cottony-fungus grows on uneaten vitamin granules I feed my shark overnight, so it's a possibility.

PS:

Hmm it was some sort of placenta looking majigger. I took her out and snipped it off. She is fine now apparently. She has been a signle female for months so I don't know why she would drop a placenta, or I didn't know fish even had placentas. But whatever it was, it wasn't poop, and is actually part of her body that she dropped. And Since I snipped it and she is swimming happily around, all I can do is hopethat it wasn't important for survival.

How awful poor thing.
Good luck.

Was it definately part of her body? Could it have been a camallanus nematode?
Parasitic worm that protrudes from anus.

Worms can look like mince beef red with white bits in it.

This was a large sac, transparent. It was almost fatty. It was big and round and growing fungus on it so I snipped it off. She is stil swimming around so we will see. :(

Erm, that sounds quite bad....
You've just performed surgery, i wonder what it was you removed?
Interesting, keep it updated. Poor fish!

Yeah that is what worried me after I did it but it didn't look like it had a blood supply so I'm hoping it's not a problem. But something odd happened before this came out. She was extremely extremely agressibve in the days leading up to it. Like cichlid agressive. She was chasing big mean fish around and ripping them to shreds so i quarantined her. I'm not sure but ovaries aren't neccesary to a females survival correct? Maybe she dropped that? Femals do sometimes drop their vaginal parts from what I understand, human females I mean, so maybe this happened to her?

edit: o and with the agression thing, possible she was losing her ovaries or whatever gives her her female identity. So she started to become agressive without the hormones?

I'm thinking it may be an abortion of sorts, do mollys develop umbilicals like goodeids, it'd explain the bodily connection?
An overgrown and deformed foetus?
No ovaries aren't necessary to survival.
Googling like mad but can't find anything similar, know of any good and exact molly anatomy pics online?
Could at least whittle down your options...

Im glad it sounds like the fish is doing better. I must say though I think the most probable thing is still a bad fungal infection around that area which could have happened after a difficult pregnancy or something. Just from the description of it, it sounds more like a fungus that a prolapse of some sort. Either way, I hope the fish pulls through.

I had something very similar with a female halfbeak (also a livebearer). She died a couple days later. As best as I could figure out, it was a tumour or cyst, became infected, blocked the uterus, trapped the fry inside her, caused massive swelling, and eventually killed her. Horrible. The blockage was whitish but silvery in parts, like an eyeball or something.

I guess your approach has to be this: if it isn't interfering with her bodily functions, i.e., defecating and releasing fry, then you can treat it as something benign and see what happens. But if it is obstructing the vent, then short of removing it, it will eventually kill her. You could remove her with a net and try and knock the thing with a cocktail stick or similar, to see if its firmly attached or not. But even in the short term, I'd class this as extremely serious.

Cheers, Neale

Hmm the female just keeps goin n' goin. She seems fine but still has a tiny bit of stuff hanging out her back end.
