Okay, so I changed Darby's water today (40%) and have been watching him closely. He's been doing his "nose dive" again, and I wondered if maybe it was because the new water didn't have the same concentration of salt that I'd previously placed in his tank.
After watching him for a couple of hours, I noticed a small spot on his side where it looked like he had scraped himself on his decoration during one of his swoops. (You can see a video here of him doing it.)

Naturally, this got me worried, and I've been wondering if his color was normally not very brilliant or if he was just settling in a bit.
Anyway, long story short, I did some further investigation and discovered that you can shine a flashlight on their bodies to look for a "golden dust". Lo and behold, he is shining with golden flakes, particularly on his tail fin!!!
He hasn't shown other signs such as clamped fins, under eating or being lethargic (on the contrary, he's been quite active and hungry!), but I do notice that his dorsal fin hasn't been exactly standing upright, until I added the salt to his water about 4 days ago.

I just had to post in the hopes that someone might have some advice. I've added another 1/4 teaspoon of pure sodium chloride (sea salt) to the tank and turned off the light (as I've read that the parasite needs light to live). I'll be going to the petstore after work today to see if I can pick up some meds.
Would someone mind shining their fish with a flashlight to tell me if they have any kind of shining gold looking dust on them? I don't want to overreact and medicate him if it's just a case of being an "over protective fish mum". I'll see if I can get a close up of his fins for an example shot.

Edit: Here are some pics I took, they're on the larger side, so be warned.

It does look a bit like velvet, especially where he just has random speckling in certain places. Is he flicking? parasites like that will make him itchy, so they'll rub and flick on things. That could account for the rubbed off/missing scale(s) I would recommend treating with Jungle velvet guard, thats what i used on sage and it worked like a charm.

Here (Information from the betta bug)

Velvet:-

Velvet is another pesky little parasite. If you always add aquarium salt to your betta’s water (1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per 2 1/2 Gal of water) and one drop of Aquarisol per gal, your betta will probably never get velvet. It is very contagious, but bettas will fully recover if treated promptly. Velvet is the number one killer of small betta fries.

Symptoms:-

Velvet is hard to spot, but can be best spotted with a flashlight. Shine the light on the betta’s body: if it looks like it is covered with a fine gold or rust mist, then it has velvet. A betta with velvet will act sick, so look for clamped fins, scratching against rocks/gravel/tank, loss of appetite, loss of color etc...

Treatment:-

Velvet is a parasite. Because velvet is very VERY contagious, it is preferable to treat the whole tank when one fish is found to have it. Increase the amount of salt as the procedure for ick (see above). Use a medication for velvet such as Maracide.

Occasionally he will do sort of a flicking motion, but it's more of a full body thing, not just with his fins. (Having never seen a fish flick, I guess I'm not sure how to spot it...)

As always, I appreciate the advice Jade. I've got a whole list of recommended medicines I've found on the internet, so hopefully I'll find the best one at my LFS.

Sage is continuing to do better I hope?
I wish I had more time to browse for the best treatment, but I'm off to work in about 20 minutes and I don't want to leave him with an infection for a single minute longer than he needs to.
Is there anything in particular to worry about tank-wise while I treat him? Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Well, I couldn't find the jungle velvet guard, so I bought aquari-sol, which I've heard is effective after doing a bit of research on the net. Of course it was just my luck that I wrote down all the recommended meds in my notebook, then left the notebook at work.
I'm just getting ready to dose him, but I'm not sure how much to add to the 3g. Blasted conversions!
