Ok so 24 hours after I swiched my 2 tanks over to sand, my larger tank (straight play sand) had cleared nicely all the sand settled and no cloudy water. However in my smaller tank (I used 2 parts play sand and 1 part pure quartz reptile sand) was still really cloudy. I know it was due to the quartz sand (which is much finer than the play sand) because the quartz sand was red, and I had red cloudy water. I think because the quartz sand is a much finer grain, some of it just didn't settle and was floating aroung the tank. So I decided to do a water change to help clear out the cloud. By the way fishless cycling so no harm to fish done with what I totally accidently did. At anyrate, as I am fishless cycling, and in the 5 gallon tank, the ammonia is clearing every 12 hours I have the bottle of ammonia near the tank. I am sure you can see what is coming, and yes that is EXACTLY what I did, I grab, what I thought was the bottle of treated water and started to pour, OMG. I realized almost immediately it was the jug of ammonia and not the jug of water because of the smell, but still probaly poured 1/8 of a cup of pure ammonia into my tank
. I still can't believe I did this. The only silver lining is the ammonia I have is only a 4% concentration, so not a 9 + % but still. So needless to say I now had to do another water change, did about 75% water change (I didn't want to loose all my nitrate other wise those bacteria would die out), tested the ammonia levels, it was BLACK - so dark green that it looked black, no joking. So, did another 75-90% water change, came down to about 8+ ppm, repeated 75% water change and it was now reading 4ppm, thank god. But of course my nitrites are now 0, but somehow I still had a reading of 5 nitrates ... I gues those bacteria had a little feast for a while there
. But on the bright side, I do have nice clear water now, and the little bit of algae that was forming is also gone. Well hopefully I didn't do to much damage to the cycle ... but it did get my heart pumping

and the ammonia bottle is back under the sink, the convience of having it close to the tank is not worth my heat attack nor my lungs (the fumes were aweful)
